Conrad Questions Series Value but Backs Exposure for Emerging South Africa Players

South Africa head coach Shukri Conrad has acknowledged doubts surrounding the competitive value of the ongoing T20I series against New Zealand, admitting it may not fully represent top-tier international cricket due to the absence of several first-choice players on both sides. However, he emphasized that the series has still served a crucial purpose in developing emerging talent.

Speaking ahead of the series-deciding fifth match, Conrad pointed to the timing of the tour—scheduled soon after the T20 World Cup and just before major franchise leagues like the IPL and PSL—as a key reason behind the understrength squads. South Africa have only three members of their World Cup squad—Keshav Maharaj, George Linde, and Jason Smith—available, while New Zealand too saw their squad depleted as the series progressed.

“I think it’s been an exciting series. Whether it is fully-fledged international cricket, I think the jury is out,” Conrad said, acknowledging that opinions will differ on the relevance of such contests. Still, he stressed the importance of national representation, adding that wearing the Proteas jersey carries responsibility regardless of the circumstances.

Despite the criticism, Conrad highlighted a major positive: the opportunity for new players to experience the demands of international cricket. He noted that while tournaments like SA20 help players gain recognition, they cannot replicate the pressure and scrutiny of representing the national team.

Youngsters such as Connor Esterhuizen, Nqobani Mokoena, and Prenelan Subrayen have seized their chances. Esterhuizen impressed with a half-century in the fourth T20I, while Subrayen delivered a match-winning spell of 2 for 13. Mokoena has also stood out, taking three wickets in three games with an economy rate under seven.

For Conrad, the series may not settle debates about its status, but it has undoubtedly offered valuable insight into South Africa’s next generation.
