Former Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed has announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing an end to a distinguished career that spanned more than 15 years and included one of Pakistan’s most memorable ICC triumphs.
Sarfaraz, who represented Pakistan from 2007 to 2023, finished his international career with 54 Tests, 117 ODIs and 61 T20Is. A dependable wicketkeeper-batter and an inspirational leader, he remains the only Pakistan captain since Imran Khan to win a 50-over ICC title, guiding the team to victory in the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy.
“It has been the greatest honour of my life to represent Pakistan,” Sarfaraz said in a statement released by the Pakistan Cricket Board. “From leading the U-19 team to a world title in 2006 to lifting the ICC Champions Trophy in 2017, every moment in Pakistan colours has been special.”
Sarfaraz first gained prominence when he captained Pakistan to the Under-19 World Cup title in 2006. More than a decade later, he achieved his biggest success at the senior level by leading Pakistan—then the lowest-ranked team in the tournament—to a stunning Champions Trophy triumph in England, culminating in a memorable victory over India in the final.
As captain, Sarfaraz led Pakistan in 100 matches across formats, including 13 Tests, 50 ODIs and 37 T20Is. His most successful stint came in T20 internationals, where he transformed Pakistan into the world’s No. 1 ranked side. Under his leadership, Pakistan won 29 of 37 T20Is and recorded a world-record streak of 11 consecutive T20I series victories.
Individually, Sarfaraz scored 3031 runs in Tests with four centuries, 2315 runs in ODIs with two centuries and 818 runs in T20Is. Behind the stumps, he claimed 315 catches and 56 stumpings across formats.
Though he lost the captaincy and his place in the team in 2019, Sarfaraz produced memorable performances during his comeback, including a remarkable run of scores against New Zealand in Karachi in 2022.
His final international appearance came in the Perth Test against Australia in December 2023. Sarfaraz was recently appointed to Pakistan’s men’s selection panel, marking the start of a new chapter in his cricket journey.
