Pakistan Protest Late Bangladesh DRS Call in Mirpur ODI Thriller

Pakistan have lodged an official complaint with match referee Neeyamur Rashid following a controversial Decision Review System (DRS) moment during the final over of the third ODI against Bangladesh in Mirpur.

The Pakistan team management raised concerns over Bangladesh being allowed to review a delivery off the penultimate ball of the match, arguing that the decision was taken after a replay had already appeared on the stadium’s big screen.

At the time, Pakistan required 12 runs from the final two deliveries. Bangladesh spinner Rishad Hossain bowled a flighted delivery down the leg side to Shaheen Shah Afridi, which on-field umpire Kumar Dharmasena initially called a wide. Bangladesh then briefly discussed and opted for an lbw review, even though the ball appeared to have missed Afridi’s body entirely.

According to standard playing protocols, teams must decide whether to review within 15 seconds and before any replay is shown on the big screen to avoid outside influence. Pakistan’s complaint alleges that the replay had already been displayed, potentially revealing that the ball had brushed Afridi’s bat and prompting Bangladesh to challenge the decision.

When the review went to technology, UltraEdge detected a spike as the ball passed the toe end of Afridi’s bat. As a result, the original wide call was overturned. Although Bangladesh lost the review for lbw, the reversal of the wide decision dramatically changed the equation from 12 needed off two balls to 12 off the final delivery.

Afridi was then stumped off the last ball as Pakistan were bowled out for 279, handing Bangladesh an 11-run victory and a 2-1 series win.

Pakistan are believed to be seeking at least a public acknowledgement if procedural errors occurred. The incident added to Pakistan’s frustrations in the series after another contentious moment in the previous ODI involving Salman Ali Agha’s run-out and an on-field altercation that resulted in disciplinary sanctions.
