Campbell Kellaway’s determined half-century helped Victoria grind their way into the contest against South Australia on day two of their Sheffield Shield clash at the Junction Oval, although the match’s stakes diminished after South Australia secured a place in the final on bonus points.
Victoria closed the day on 266 for 5, trailing South Australia’s first-innings total of 305 by 39 runs. Kellaway led the resistance with a patient 66, anchoring the innings during a crucial phase while the home side attempted to close the gap.
Earlier in the day, South Australia were bowled out for 305 after resuming their innings, with Todd Murphy finishing as Victoria’s standout bowler with figures of 4 for 67. Scott Boland provided strong support, taking 3 for 66. Henry Hunt had top-scored for South Australia with 81, while Ben Manenti contributed a valuable 53 in the middle order.
Victoria’s reply started steadily but lost momentum when Sam Harper edged a sharp delivery from Nathan McAndrew. Dylan Brasher looked comfortable during his 35 but threw away his wicket attempting an ambitious lofted drive against Manenti.
Kellaway then combined with Peter Handscomb to stabilise the innings with a 102-run partnership. Handscomb appeared in control for most of his stay, capitalising on some loose bowling from South Australia’s attack.
However, the breakthrough came when Nathan McSweeney’s spin deceived Kellaway, drawing an edge that was sharply caught by Alex Carey behind the stumps. The dismissal triggered a brief collapse for Victoria, who lost three wickets for just 21 runs around the tea interval.
Carey continued to shine in the field, taking a spectacular one-handed catch to dismiss Handscomb for 48 and later claiming another catch to remove Marcus Harris.
Despite the setbacks, Oliver Peake (44 not out) and Will Sutherland (42 not out) steadied Victoria late in the day with an unbroken partnership. Their stand ensured the hosts remained within reach as the match heads toward its final stages, even with South Australia already assured of a place in the Sheffield Shield final.
