Carey, McAndrew Turn Final on Its Head as Victoria Stumble in Chase

South Australia surged back into contention for the Sheffield Shield title thanks to outstanding performances from Alex Carey and Nathan McAndrew, leaving Victoria wobbling at 102 for 5 in pursuit of 196 on day four at Junction Oval.

Carey delivered a captain’s knock of 103—his second century in consecutive Shield finals—anchoring South Australia’s second innings. He found crucial support in McAndrew, who scored a resilient 60, as the pair stitched together a vital 105-run partnership after the side had slumped to 122 for 7. Earlier, Scott Boland had threatened to blow the game open with two wickets in two balls, finishing with 3 for 78.

Carey’s innings was marked by composure under pressure, steadily guiding the lower order while managing the strike expertly. McAndrew complemented him with a determined display, mixing solid defence with aggressive strokeplay, including a standout upper cut for six.

Set 196 to win, Victoria’s chase began in disastrous fashion. Early breakthroughs from McAndrew and Jordan Buckingham reduced them to 35 for 3, putting South Australia firmly on top. However, Marcus Harris and Peter Handscomb rebuilt with a 67-run partnership, briefly steadying the innings.

Just as Victoria appeared to regain control, two late wickets swung momentum back South Australia’s way. Handscomb edged behind attempting an aggressive cut, while Harris fell shortly after, caught in the slips.

At stumps, Victoria still require 94 runs with five wickets in hand, setting up a gripping final day. With the pitch offering variable bounce and both teams having experienced collapses, the contest remains finely poised.

South Australia, chasing back-to-back titles, will take confidence from their fightback, while Victoria must regroup quickly if they are to clinch their first Shield crown since 2019 in what promises to be a dramatic finish.
