Brad Haddin Appointed New South Wales Head Coach After Turbulent Season

Brad Haddin has been named the new head coach of New South Wales, stepping into the role after a turbulent period for the state side both on and off the field. The former Australia wicketkeeper-batter replaces Greg Shipperd, whose tenure ended amid administrative upheaval and mixed on-field results.

Haddin’s appointment was confirmed less than 24 hours after NSW’s season concluded, a campaign that saw them secure the One-Day Cup but finish a disappointing fifth in the Sheffield Shield. The decision comes as the state looks to revive its dominance in red-ball cricket and address concerns over a declining production line of international players.

A veteran of 66 Tests, Haddin brings extensive experience, having previously served as an assistant coach with Australia and in franchise leagues, including the IPL. He will officially begin his role in June ahead of pre-season training.

Speaking after his appointment, Haddin expressed confidence in the squad’s potential, highlighting what he described as “generational talent” within the system. He emphasized the need to restore high standards and a distinct playing identity, while encouraging a fearless approach to the game.

“I’m under no illusions—we need to produce Australian players again,” Haddin said, acknowledging the lack of recent Test debutants from NSW as a major concern.

However, the transition has not been without controversy. Assistant coaches Ali de Winter and Shawn Bradstreet were informed of their departures during the final match of the season, drawing criticism from former players who described the process as poorly handled.

Cricket NSW chief executive Lee Germon admitted the situation had been difficult but defended the timing, citing logistical constraints.

Haddin now faces the challenge of rebuilding both performance and culture as NSW aims to return to the top of Australian domestic cricket.
