India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav opened up about his journey, leadership, and emotional World Cup triumph, blending humor with honesty as he reflected on his success in cricket compared to academics.
After leading India to victory in the 2026 T20 World Cup at Narendra Modi Stadium, Suryakumar revealed that winning at home carried special significance. The team was determined to lift the trophy in Ahmedabad, the same venue where India had suffered heartbreak in the 2023 ODI World Cup final. “We wanted to win it there—that was more important for us,” he said, highlighting the emotional motivation behind the campaign.
Comparing the 2024 and 2026 title-winning teams, Suryakumar noted a shift in dynamics. The 2024 squad, led by Rohit Sharma and featuring legends like Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja, was rich in experience. In contrast, the 2026 team thrived on youthful energy and enthusiasm, even if it lacked the same level of experience.
Suryakumar’s leadership record has been remarkable, winning 42 of 52 T20Is—a success rate of over 80%. In a light-hearted remark, he compared this to his academic scores, saying, “The percentage I couldn’t achieve in school, I’m getting in cricket now.” Despite this, he emphasized his focus on winning rather than statistics.
A turning point in his career came through a candid conversation with his wife, Devisha, who pushed him to rethink his approach and set higher goals. That led to lifestyle changes, improved discipline, and ultimately his rise to international cricket in 2021.
Off the field, Suryakumar credits her for keeping him grounded. “At home, you are not Suryakumar Yadav—just be normal,” he shared, underlining the values that shaped both his career and character.
