Zak Crawley Signs One-Year Kent Extension After Losing England Central Contract

England batter Zak Crawley has signed a new one-year contract with Kent, reaffirming his commitment to his boyhood county after losing his England central contract for the 2026–27 season. The agreement means Kent will once again become his primary employer after six years under the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).
Crawley, who lost his place in England's Test team at the start of the 2026 home summer, was among just two players whose central contracts were not renewed on performance grounds. Lancashire fast bowler Luke Wood was the other player affected.
The 28-year-old has signed a series of one-year deals with Kent in recent seasons, prompting speculation about his long-term future. However, his latest extension keeps him at the club through the end of next season, when Kent will compete in Division One of the County Championship following their promotion.
Despite a difficult start to the 2026 season, Crawley finished strongly, scoring four half-centuries in six matches as Kent secured promotion. He also captained Sunrisers Leeds in The Hundred this year and is viewed as a potential future captain for Kent.
Crawley expressed his excitement about continuing with his boyhood club, highlighting the team's return to Division One and his desire to support the development of younger players. Kent's outgoing director of cricket, Simon Cook, also praised Crawley's international experience and willingness to mentor emerging batters.
Meanwhile, Derbyshire captain Wayne Madsen has signed a one-year extension covering red-ball cricket only. The 42-year-old, who announced earlier this year that he would no longer play in the T20 Blast, hopes to help Derbyshire earn promotion to Division One after finishing sixth in Division Two.
