IPL auction returns to Indian soil with Goa set to host the December 16 mini-auction

The IPL will stage its 2027 player auction at ITC Grand Goa on December 16, bringing the event back to Indian soil after three successive editions abroad

The BCCI has informed all ten franchises of the date and the venue, closing weeks of speculation about when the last mini-auction of the current cycle would be held. "Yes, the auction will be held on December 16," board secretary Devajit Saikia told Hindustan Times.

Franchise delegations will gather a day earlier, on December 15, for a briefing that is expected to cover purse balances, release and registration deadlines, and the rules the teams will bid under.

Before any of that, the squads themselves have to be settled. All ten teams must submit their final lists of retained and released players by November 15.

Back in India after three years away

The last three auctions were held outside India — in Dubai, in Jeddah and, most recently, in Abu Dhabi — and returning the event home had been a stated priority for the board.

Saikia had flagged the move in September, before the date was fixed. "This year, after hosting the IPL auction in three foreign locations, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi last year, we are going to host it in Goa in the month of December," he told ANI.

Finding a venue at that time of year is not straightforward in India, where the wedding and convention season takes up much of the available space in December.

Retentions come first

The November 15 deadline is the hinge of the whole exercise. What each franchise keeps determines how much of its purse survives into the auction room a month later.

Once the lists are in, the league will circulate a registered pool of available players for the teams to shortlist from.

The trading window, which has been open since the end of the 2026 season, closes a week before the auction and reopens a week after it ends.

A larger purse to spend

The total salary cap rises to Rs 157 crore for 2027, up from Rs 151 crore in 2026, under the player regulations the IPL Governing Council announced for the 2025-27 cycle.

That figure covers the auction purse together with incremental performance pay, and sits alongside the match fee of Rs 7.5 lakh per game introduced for the 2025 season.

Because this is a mini-auction rather than a mega-auction, no franchise is obliged to rebuild. Most squads will carry over largely intact, with the bidding concentrated on a handful of gaps.

A quiet trade window so far

Only two trades have been completed since the 2026 season finished. Rishabh Pant returned to Delhi Capitals from Lucknow Super Giants in a swap that sent Kuldeep Yadav the other way.

Delhi later sent T Natarajan to Sunrisers Hyderabad, with Zeeshan Ansari moving in the opposite direction.

A clash in the calendar and a bigger sale beyond

December 16 is also the date of India's second ODI against Sri Lanka in Bengaluru, leaving the board to run a televised auction and an international fixture on the same day.

The future of the Impact Player rule remains unresolved. It was discussed at a recent Governing Council meeting and is among the items franchises expect to hear about at the briefing.

This is the final auction of the 2023-27 cycle, with a mega-auction due before the 2028 season and a fresh media rights cycle beginning alongside it.

The dates for the 2027 season itself have still not been confirmed by the board.

For now the auction is the first fixed point in the IPL's calendar, and the ten franchises have three weeks to decide who they are keeping.
