Yuzvendra Chahal Opens Up About Alcohol Addiction, Anxiety and Personal Struggles

India leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has opened up about a difficult phase in his personal life, revealing how alcohol addiction, anxiety and emotional challenges affected his well-being and cricket career. During a candid conversation with former India cricketer Aakash Chopra, Chahal spoke about his struggles, recovery and efforts to rebuild his confidence.
Chahal explained that the difficulties intensified following his divorce and the public scrutiny surrounding his personal life. Constant speculation and criticism on social media became emotionally challenging, affecting his mental health and readiness to play cricket. He acknowledged that managing personal problems while remaining in the public eye was far from easy.
The leg-spinner revealed that he recognised the seriousness of his alcohol consumption after completing a county cricket stint. Realising that he needed to make significant changes, he sought professional help and spent 26 days at a rehabilitation centre. He described the experience as an important turning point that helped him reflect on his habits and work towards a healthier lifestyle.
Chahal also discussed experiencing anxiety and panic attacks, describing moments when his heart would race, his facial muscles would tighten and he would struggle to speak normally. These experiences made him realise the importance of addressing his mental health rather than ignoring the warning signs. He eventually took a break from cricket because he did not feel mentally prepared to perform at his best.
Support from his family and close friends played an important role during his recovery. Chahal gradually shifted his attention towards fitness, training and emotional well-being, while learning to manage external criticism and focus on his professional responsibilities.
The spinner also spoke about joining Punjab Kings for ₹18 crore ahead of the 2025 Indian Premier League season. The franchise's confidence motivated him to work hard and contribute to the team's success. One of his standout performances came against Kolkata Knight Riders, when Punjab Kings successfully defended a target of just 112 runs. Chahal claimed four wickets for 28 runs, helping his team secure a memorable victory.
Chahal's revelations highlight the personal challenges professional athletes can experience away from the field. His experience also underlines the importance of seeking help, accepting support and prioritising mental well-being during difficult periods. As he continues his cricketing journey, the leg-spinner is focused on maintaining a healthier lifestyle and approaching both his personal and professional life with renewed determination.
