Yuvraj Singh begins his coaching career as Delhi Capitals' assistant and batting coach

Delhi Capitals have appointed Yuvraj Singh as their assistant and batting coach for IPL 2027, the first formal coaching role of his career
The franchise confirmed the appointment on Tuesday, a week after naming Sourav Ganguly as head coach, placing two of the most recognisable figures in recent Indian cricket in the same dressing room in new jobs.
Yuvraj, 44, played 304 one-day internationals, 40 Tests and 58 T20Is for India and was part of the sides that won the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 World Cup. Until now he had never held a formal coaching position, in the IPL or anywhere else.
"I am excited to begin a new chapter in my life with the Delhi Capitals," he said in a statement released by the franchise, describing coaching as something he is "truly passionate about".
Back at the franchise that paid a record fee
Yuvraj last played for the club in 2015, when it was still called the Delhi Daredevils and signed him for Rs 16 crore — at the time the most expensive purchase in IPL history.
He appeared in all 14 matches of that season. Across his IPL career he played 132 games, scoring 2,750 runs and taking 36 wickets.
"I have an old association with the franchise and I know the owners well," he said, calling the job "a special opportunity".
He will work under Ganguly, with the franchise placing him at the centre of its batting development programme.
A reunion with Dada
The appointment brings Yuvraj back together with Ganguly, his former India captain, who was named Delhi Capitals head coach earlier this month.
"I'm also looking forward to teaming up with Dada, this time as coaches," Yuvraj said.
News agency PTI had reported in June that both men were expected to join the franchise, and the two appointments have now been made a week apart.
Ganguly's own appointment was confirmed in the first week of October, giving Delhi a coaching pair whose international careers overlapped for most of the 2000s.
A mentor long before the title
Yuvraj has worked informally with a string of India batters, among them Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma and Prabhsimran Singh.
Rishabh Pant also turned to him for advice during a lean run with the bat. That relationship now becomes a working one at Delhi Capitals.
None of that work carried a job title. The Delhi Capitals role is the first time Yuvraj has been formally employed to coach batters rather than advise them privately.
A squad rebuilt around Pant
Pant rejoined the Capitals in June in a trade with the Lucknow Super Giants that sent wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav the other way.
Delhi are still waiting for a first IPL title. They have reached one final, in 2020, and have missed the playoffs in each of the past two seasons.
The trade was completed in June, and Pant now returns to a side whose batting group will be overseen by a coach he has already leaned on.
An ownership handover behind the overhaul
The club is jointly owned by the GMR Group and the JSW Group, which alternate charge of the men's team in a two-year cycle. GMR's turn ended in 2026.
That cycle puts JSW in charge of the men's team for the coming season, and the appointments of Ganguly and Yuvraj are the first senior changes to the coaching staff since the handover.
"His experience, winning mindset, and ability to connect with players will be invaluable to our squad," said Parth Jindal, the Delhi Capitals chairman and co-owner.
Delhi Capitals will begin the 2027 season with a new head coach, a new batting coach and a batting order rebuilt around Pant.
