Andre Russell has long been Kolkata Knight Riders' (KKR) designated game-changer. But in IPL 2025, he's barely had the chance to make an impact with the bat. Across four innings, Russell hasn’t batted higher than No. 7 — and even dropped to No. 8 against Mumbai Indians. He’s faced just 20 balls all season, scoring 17 runs. Naturally, fans and pundits are asking: why isn't Russell batting higher?

Ahead of KKR's clash with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at Chepauk, Venkatesh Iyer addressed the issue, attributing Russell’s position to a mix of tactical decisions, data analysis, and team balance.

“From the analytics point of view, entry point is a huge thing,” Venkatesh explained. “We assess whether a pitch suits an individual, and decide if they should come in early or late. People outside will always talk, but let’s not forget we also have Rinku Singh and Ramandeep Singh — and they’re strong contenders for those spots.”

Data-Driven Decisions and Left-Right Balance

KKR’s decision-making appears driven by match-ups, pitch conditions, and a desire to maintain left-right combinations through the middle overs. In their season opener against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Rinku batted at No. 6 ahead of Russell after Venkatesh fell in the 13th over. More recently, against Lucknow Super Giants, Ramandeep Singh was promoted to No. 5.

“We have a lot of experience in the dressing room,” Venkatesh said. “DJ Bravo has played over 600 T20 games and knows the Chepauk surface inside out. Every decision we take is well thought out and backed by data and experience.”

Chepauk Familiarity and KKR’s Spin Depth

KKR’s think tank is well-versed in Chepauk’s nuances. Bravo spent two seasons as CSK’s bowling coach, while players like Varun Chakravarthy, Moeen Ali, and Ajinkya Rahane are all familiar with the conditions. Moeen could return to the XI if the pitch assists spin, possibly replacing Spencer Johnson.

“Varun is world-class and knows this ground well. Ajinkya and Moeen also spent a couple of years here. So we’re confident going into this game,” said Venkatesh.

Iyer’s Return to Form

After a slow start to the season, Venkatesh Iyer has bounced back with scores of 60 (vs SRH) and 45 (vs LSG). He credited a positive mindset for the turnaround rather than focusing solely on runs.

“For me, it’s about mindset and approach. This is one of the toughest T20 leagues in the world — skill is equal on both sides. What sets you apart is how you think and prepare,” he said.
