Wellington Shines Under Pressure as Somerset Clinch First Vitality Blast Win

Amanda-Jade Wellington produced a match-winning all-round performance to help Somerset clinch their first victory of the Vitality Blast campaign, defeating Essex by four wickets in a tense finish at Taunton.

Chasing 156, Wellington struck a composed 29 off 23 balls and shared a vital 45-run partnership with Fran Wilson, who top-scored with 41. Somerset reached the target with three balls to spare, ending a run of nine straight defeats.

Earlier, Essex posted 155 for 5 after being put in to bat. Jodi Grewcock led the way with 45 from 34 balls, while Cordelia Griffith contributed 31. Wellington was economical with the ball too, taking 1 for 25 from her four overs.

Somerset’s chase began positively with Niamh Holland and Bex Odgers adding 41 in five overs, but three quick wickets brought Essex back into the game. MacGregor’s 3 for 19 created pressure late on, yet Wellington and Alex Griffiths held their nerve to seal a much-needed win for the home side.
