BCCI moves the IPL 2027 retention deadline to November 17 and keeps the Goa auction on December 16

The BCCI has given IPL franchises two extra days to file their retention and release lists, moving the deadline to November 17 while leaving the mini-auction in Goa on December 16

All ten Indian Premier League franchises now have until November 17 to tell the board which players they are keeping for 2027 and which they are letting go, after the deadline was pushed back by two days in a communique sent to the teams on Monday.

The original cut-off of November 15 fell on the same day as the fifth and final ODI of India's tour of New Zealand, at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui, leaving two of the board's own commitments competing for the same afternoon.

The sale itself has not moved. The mini-auction remains set for December 16 in Goa, the first to be staged in India after three editions held in Saudi Arabia, Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Two extra days for ten squads

The retention list is the first decision of any auction cycle. It fixes which players a franchise carries into the new season and, by subtraction, how much of its purse is left to spend once bidding starts.

Everyone released on November 17 goes into the auction pool, where the other nine teams can bid for them. A side that keeps an expensive core arrives in Goa with little room to manoeuvre; a side that clears its books arrives with the most.

The extension applies to all ten franchises equally and changes nothing else about the process.

A deadline that met a fixture

India's limited-overs tour of New Zealand runs through the first half of November. The ODI series opens at Eden Park on November 4 and closes at Bay Oval on November 15, with matches at Sky Stadium and Seddon Park in between.

That final fixture is the one the original deadline collided with, and it is the reason given in reports for the change. The board has not published an explanation of its own.

The rest of the auction calendar

Player registration opened on November 2, the same day the revised schedule reached the franchises, and closes on November 23, a week after the retention lists fall due.

Teams then submit shortlists of the players they want by December 1. The final auction register, with players grouped into sets and the order in which they will be called, is expected to reach the franchises around December 3.

That leaves a fortnight between the finished list and the auction table.

What a mini-auction allows

A mini-auction sets no cap on how many players a team may retain, so most squads carry over largely intact. The limits that bind are the 25-player squad, a maximum of eight overseas players, and whatever is left of the purse.

The trade window stays open until a week before the auction, and two deals have already redrawn squads. Rishabh Pant has returned to Delhi Capitals from Lucknow Super Giants, with Kuldeep Yadav moving the other way.

Delhi have also sent T Natarajan to Sunrisers Hyderabad and taken Zeeshan Ansari in return.

The last sale before the mega auction

This is the final mini-auction of the current cycle. A mega auction, at which squads are broken up and rebuilt from the ground, is scheduled before the 2028 season, which gives the December sale the character of an adjustment rather than a reset.

The 2027 tournament will be the IPL's 20th season, and its dates have not been confirmed. Board secretary Devajit Saikia has pointed to a start towards the end of March.

One clash is still unresolved. Reports in India place a second ODI between India and Sri Lanka at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on December 16, the day of the auction, and suggest the match could be moved to December 17. The board has announced no change.

The lists are due on November 17, and everything after that date stands as it was.
