"Unacceptable": Mike Hesson Slams Mirpur Pitch After Pakistan’s T20I Disaster

Pakistan white-ball coach Mike Hesson has strongly criticized the playing surface at Mirpur’s Shere Bangla National Stadium, calling it “unacceptable” for international cricket following his team's heavy defeat in the opening T20I against Bangladesh. Pakistan were dismissed for just 110 runs in 19.3 overs, crumbling to 46/5 by the eighth over as batters fell attempting aggressive shots that the pitch did not support.

Hesson admitted Pakistan misread the conditions, but he laid primary blame on the pitch’s quality.

“I think the pitch is not ideal for anybody… it is not up to international standards,” Hesson said.
He explained that Pakistan’s fast start misled the players into believing it was a good batting surface, but as the ball began to nip and bounce unevenly, their inability to adjust proved costly.
“We got off to a little bit of a flyer … it gave us a false indication … When the ball started to nip through and bounced steeply, we probably didn’t assess that it was a bit more challenging to play high-risk shots.”

In contrast, Bangladesh opener Parvez Hossain Emon, who guided his team to victory with an unbeaten 56 off 39 balls, defended the pitch, suggesting that the successful chase indicated the surface wasn’t as problematic as it seemed.

“We didn’t feel it was a bad pitch as we chased it down… we could have scored 150–160 if we batted the full 20 overs.”

Hesson, however, remained firm in his criticism, warning that poor surfaces hinder the development of players.

“You need good cricket wickets to develop cricketers.… I don’t think it helps them when they leave Bangladesh.”

Bangladesh captain Litton Das responded by noting that local players are familiar with Mirpur’s nature and that the ball came on better in the second innings, potentially due to dew. He downplayed concerns, implying that the conditions were typical and manageable with the right approach.

The debate underscores a broader issue in subcontinental cricket — the fine line between leveraging home advantage and maintaining fair, consistent playing standards. While Hesson’s frustration reflects his team’s collapse and unfamiliarity with such pitches, the contrasting views from the Bangladeshi camp highlight just how crucial adaptability remains in international cricket.

Looking ahead, attention will turn to how both teams respond in the second T20I. Pakistan will be under pressure to show greater discipline and tactical awareness, while pitch conditions will remain under the microscope amid calls for a better balance between bat and ball.
