Tushar Deshpande took a hat-trick and finished with 5-17 as Chandigarh were bowled out for 78 at the Wankhede, leaving Mumbai five wickets from an innings victory
Mumbai's opening fixture of the Ranji Trophy season has become one-sided inside three days. Having posted 429 in 136.5 overs after Chandigarh chose to bowl, they dismissed the visitors for 78 in 19.1 overs and enforced the follow-on.
The innings was taken apart by Tushar Deshpande, who removed three batters in three deliveries in the 11th over on his way to 5-17. Mohit Avasthi took 3-9 and Sylvester D'Souza 2-51.
Chandigarh began their second innings a run behind on the second evening and have since reached 114 for 5, still 237 runs adrift of making Mumbai bat again.
Deshpande had already bowled Arslan Khan in the seventh over when he returned for his sixth. The third ball of that over found the edge of Arjun Azad, who had made 20, and Sylvester D'Souza held the catch.
The fourth bowled Shivam Bhambri first ball. The fifth took the outside edge of Dipender Kush, and Yashasvi Jaiswal completed the hat-trick at first slip.
Chandigarh were 25 for 4 when the over ended, having lost their first wicket only in the seventh. Deshpande conceded nothing from the last ball.
Raj Bawa's dismissal in the 13th over left Chandigarh 29 for 6, and only one stand of any length followed.
Rohit Dhanda made 48, more than half of the eventual total, and his dismissal was Deshpande's fifth wicket of the innings. The last four wickets added 49 runs between them.
Deshpande, Avasthi and D'Souza took all ten wickets between them, for 77 runs.
Mumbai's first innings had been a patient one. Siddhesh Lad, leading the side for the first time, made 86 from 192 balls, and Musheer Khan contributed 65 from 149.
Tanush Kotian added 58 from 91 and Mohit Avasthi 56 from 119, while Deshpande struck 44 from 47 with four fours and two sixes. Shams Mulani made 39 and Ayush Mhatre 48.
Rohit Dhanda and Raj Bawa took four wickets each for Chandigarh, who kept Mumbai to 3.14 runs an over across the innings but could not finish it off until the 137th.
Mhatre did not take the field on the second day, and Suved Parkar fielded in his place.
The spell came in Deshpande's 50th first-class match and brought him his sixth five-wicket haul at the level.
He is the sixth Mumbai bowler to take a Ranji Trophy hat-trick, following Jehangir Khot, Umesh Kulkarni, Abdul Ismail, Royston Dias and Shardul Thakur.
Thakur, who captained Mumbai last season, is missing this fixture with a finger injury, which is how the captaincy passed to Lad.
His recent red-ball work has included 4-57 for West Zone against North Zone in the Duleep Trophy quarter-final.
Deshpande struck once more in the final over of the second day, bowling Vishu Kashyap for a duck to leave Chandigarh 0 for 1 second time around.
Half the side was back in the pavilion by the 28th over on the third day, and Chandigarh must now bat out the rest of the match to avoid an innings defeat.
Mumbai, in search of a 43rd title, need five wickets to begin the season with an innings victory.
Scorecard: Mumbai 429 (136.5 overs); Chandigarh 78 (19.1 overs) and 114 for 5 (28 overs), following on — day three, Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.
