India have taken both ICC Player of the Month awards for September, with Shubman Gill collecting a record fifth men's prize and Shafali Verma a second
The ICC confirmed both winners on Tuesday. Shubman Gill was chosen ahead of his India team-mate Abhishek Sharma and Zimbabwe's Sikandar Raza, while Shafali Verma came through a women's shortlist she shared with the India spinner Sree Charani and the Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu.
Gill's month amounted to 333 runs in two one-day internationals against West Indies, a hundred in Thiruvananthapuram and an unbeaten double century in Guwahati. India won both matches by eight wickets.
Verma's case was built across two tournaments on two continents, the Women's Asia Cup in the UAE and the Asian Games in Japan, and returned 360 runs in seven T20Is at an average of 72 and a strike rate of 184.61.
It is Gill's fifth monthly award, after wins in January 2023, September 2023, February 2025 and July 2025, and it extends his standing as the men's player with the most Player of the Month wins.
The most recent Indian winner of the men's award before him was Sanju Samson in March 2026. India's men have now won it 17 times across 11 players.
"It feels fantastic to win my fifth ICC Player of the Month award, and I am grateful to the panel for this honour," Gill said. "It was immensely satisfying to score those runs and even more special to be part of successful run chases in front of our home fans, whose support always gives us an extra boost."
In the series opener at Thiruvananthapuram on 27 September, Gill made 110 from 108 balls as India chased 296 after West Indies had posted 295 for 7.
Three days later in Guwahati, West Indies made 405 for 7, their first total above 400 in the series. Gill answered with 223 not out from 133 balls, with 26 fours and eight sixes, and India finished on 406 for 2 in 43.3 overs with 39 balls unused.
He reached his hundred in 62 balls, the fastest by an India captain in the format, and his double hundred in 117, the fastest in ODI history. The innings is also the highest individual score made in a successful one-day international chase.
Gill and Rohit Sharma, who made 101 from 75 balls, put on 255 for the first wicket. India took the series 2-1 after West Indies won the third match on 3 October.
Verma was the leading run-scorer at the Asia Cup with 236 runs in five innings, including 64 in the semi-final against Bangladesh and 68 in the final against Sri Lanka, as India secured a record-extending eighth title.
At the Asian Games in Japan she made 188 runs in three innings, among them an unbeaten 40 against Japan and a maiden T20I century, 100 from 49 balls, against Bangladesh in the semi-final.
In the gold-medal match against Sri Lanka she scored 48 and took two wickets in a 147-run win. She finished the two tournaments with six wickets at an average of 13 and an economy rate of 4.33, and climbed into the top four of the ICC women's T20I batting rankings.
It is the 22-year-old's second monthly award. The first came in November last year, when India won the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup on home soil.
"It is an incredible honour to win the ICC Player of the Month award again," Verma said. "It was immensely satisfying to play my part in our victories at the Asia Cup and the Asian Games, and winning this award makes those triumphs even more special."
She named the ICC Women's Champions Trophy in February as her next target.
"The pace of ODI cricket has gone up significantly, and you must think on your feet, assess the conditions quickly and adapt to the demands of the pitch," Gill said. "With the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup in southern Africa next year, we are determined to keep raising our standards and build a strong, well-rounded team capable of rising to the challenges ahead."
Gill's side travel to New Zealand later this month, while Verma's face Zimbabwe before that February tournament.
