India captain Suryakumar Yadav has set his sights on winning an Olympic gold medal after leading India to their third T20 World Cup title. Speaking after the final in Ahmedabad, Suryakumar said the team’s next big target is the cricket tournament at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
India recently defended their T20 World Cup crown with a commanding victory over New Zealand, continuing a successful run in white-ball cricket that has also included the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. Reflecting on the journey, Suryakumar said the past month had been special for the team, even though the tournament did not start exactly as planned.
“It has been a wonderful journey,” he said. “What we have achieved collectively as a team is right in front of you. I’m very happy with that, and the next goal is the Olympic gold.”
Cricket will return to the Olympic Games for the first time since the 1900 edition in Paris after the International Olympic Committee approved its inclusion in the Los Angeles 2028 programme. The tournament will feature six teams each in the men’s and women’s competitions and will be played between July 14 and 29.
Matches are scheduled to take place at a temporary stadium at the Fairgrounds in Pomona, about 50 kilometres from Los Angeles. Based on current ICC T20 rankings, India are well placed to qualify from Asia.
Suryakumar also pointed to India’s 2024 T20 World Cup victory under Rohit Sharma as a turning point for the side.
“Everything changed post-2024,” he said. “We started playing a different brand of cricket and understood how this team needs to move forward.”
With multiple ICC titles already secured in recent years, the Indian captain said the team is determined to continue its winning momentum through the rest of the decade.
