Rain denies Western Australia victory as Queensland cling to Shield final hopes

Queensland’s hopes of reaching the Sheffield Shield final remain alive after rain forced a draw in their match against Western Australia at Allan Border Field.

The Bulls were in deep trouble heading into the final day, resuming at 43 for 6 while chasing 267 for victory. Western Australia were on the brink of sealing just their second win of the season, but persistent rain allowed only five overs to be bowled on Sunday before play was abandoned.

Just a single run was added during the brief morning session before showers returned and halted proceedings. With forecasts predicting between 20mm and 90mm of rain in the area, conditions never improved enough for play to resume. The match was officially called off at 4pm local time, leaving Western Australia four wickets short of victory.

The drawn result proved a major setback for Western Australia, who had dominated much of the match. The visitors posted totals of 210 and 229, setting Queensland a challenging target on a difficult surface.

Earlier in the match, half-centuries from Cameron Bancroft (72) and Matthew Fanning (87) helped strengthen Western Australia’s position. However, Queensland captain Marnus Labuschagne produced an impressive spell with the ball, claiming 4 for 22 to keep his side within reach of the target.

Western Australia’s bowling attack was led by former Queensland seamer Cameron Gannon, who delivered another strong performance with 3 for 38 in the first innings and 3 for 27 in the second. His efforts lifted his season tally to a competition-leading 38 wickets at an average of 23.92.

Despite their batting struggles, the draw keeps Queensland’s slim final hopes intact. They currently sit third on the table and must defeat Tasmania in Hobart in the final round while hoping ladder leaders Victoria beat South Australia to secure a place in the March 26–30 Sheffield Shield final.
