Sri Lanka take England to an Oval decider after levelling the series at Headingley

Sri Lanka's 16-run win at Headingley has levelled the one-day series and left England to settle it at the Oval without Jos Buttler

England and Sri Lanka meet at Kennington Oval on Sunday in the third and deciding one-day international of the tour, with first ball at 10:30am local time.

The visitors arrive level at 1-1, having won at Headingley on Thursday for their first victory of a trip that had already brought a 3-0 defeat in the T20I series and a loss in the one-day opener at Chester-le-Street.

England will be without Jos Buttler, ruled out with the hamstring injury he sustained during that chase, and have called up the uncapped one-day batter Dan Lawrence from Surrey.

Jacks sets up the opener

England took the first match at Chester-le-Street by 89 runs on 22 September, posting 265 all out before dismissing Sri Lanka for 176.

Will Jacks was named player of the match for an all-round performance that included a maiden five-wicket haul of 5-22.

Sachindu Colombage took 3-44 on debut for Sri Lanka, and Harry Brook made 67 in England's innings.

Mendis levels it at Headingley

Captain Kusal Mendis made 121 from 100 balls two days later, reaching his seventh ODI hundred in 82 deliveries with a cover-driven boundary off Jamie Overton. The innings contained 12 fours and three sixes.

He added 137 for the second wicket with Kamindu Mendis, who made 54, and Sri Lanka closed on 321 for 6.

England's reply opened with a stand of 143 between Tom Banton, who made 73, and Ben Duckett, who made 67. Left-arm spinner Dunith Wellalage then removed both openers and Brook to leave the hosts 157 for 3, finishing with 3-49.

Chasing 322, England ended on 305 for 9. "I'm so happy winning and getting the hundred. The overall performance was very good," Mendis said afterwards.

Buttler ruled out of the decider

Buttler pulled up with a problem in his left hamstring in the 38th over of the chase and retired hurt, returning late in the innings to make 69 before he was caught at deep midwicket off Dilshan Madushanka in the final over.

An ECB spokesperson said: "Jos Buttler has been ruled out due to the hamstring injury he suffered in the second Metro Bank ODI at Headingley last night and will undergo further assessment."

Jordan Cox, who has played three ODIs, is expected to take the gloves in his place. "If I do get the opportunity, that will be awesome. Jos is probably the best-ever white-ball cricketer," Cox said.

Lawrence called up from Taunton

Lawrence was withdrawn from Surrey's County Championship match against Somerset and trained with England at the Oval on Saturday morning.

He has played 17 Tests but has yet to make a limited-overs appearance for England.

The match he left is still running: Surrey were bowled out for 422 at Taunton and Somerset had reached 691 for 8 by the close of the third day, a lead of 269.

Brook looks beyond the series

Brook called the Headingley defeat "an outstanding game" and framed the decider as preparation for next year's 50-over World Cup in southern Africa.

"We've got a great opportunity now to try and win this series, and a great opportunity for 12 months' time," the England captain said. "In pressure situations, like the one that awaits us at the Oval, it will be great to see where we are as a team."

England have not settled on a wicketkeeper-batter for that tournament, and Buttler's absence hands Cox a rare 50-over audition.

The winner takes the series in the final fixture of Sri Lanka's tour of England.
