South African IPL Stars Set to Miss Playoffs Due to WTC Final Commitments

Eight South African players involved in both IPL 2025 and the upcoming World Test Championship (WTC) final are expected to depart India by May 25, as per the original No Objection Certificates (NOCs) issued by Cricket South Africa (CSA). This group includes Kagiso Rabada (Gujarat Titans), Lungi Ngidi (Royal Challengers Bengaluru), Tristan Stubbs (Delhi Capitals), Aiden Markram (Lucknow Super Giants), Ryan Rickelton and Corbin Bosch (Mumbai Indians), Marco Jansen (Punjab Kings), and Wiaan Mulder (Sunrisers Hyderabad). Their early departure would rule them out of the IPL playoffs, scheduled to begin on May 29 and conclude with the final on June 3.

The situation has sparked ongoing discussions between CSA and the BCCI, with CSA standing firm on its desire for players to return by May 26 to begin WTC final preparations. CSA’s head coach Shukri Conrad emphasized the need for a timely return, citing the importance of the WTC final against Australia at Lord’s (June 11–15). National team director Enoch Nkwe echoed this sentiment, stating that while the decision ultimately lies with the players, CSA expects all Test squad members to adhere to the initial timeline.

The South African squad is scheduled to fly to the UK on May 30 and will play a warm-up game against Zimbabwe starting June 3 in Arundel—coinciding with the IPL final. The forced early exit of key South African players could significantly impact IPL franchises in playoff contention. Gujarat Titans may lose Rabada, Punjab Kings could be without Jansen, and RCB, MI, and DC also risk losing key personnel. While SRH are already out of the playoff race and LSG are on the verge of elimination, this development could alter playoff strategies for several title contenders.

CSA hopes the BCCI will respect their stance given the WTC final’s significance but is mindful of the potential strain it could place on relations between the two boards.
