Keaton Jennings has stepped down as Lancashire’s red-ball captain with immediate effect, following the club's dismal start to the 2024 County Championship season. Australian batter Marcus Harris, Lancashire’s leading overseas signing, will take over as interim captain. The decision comes after Lancashire’s winless run across five matches—four draws and a heavy three-day defeat to Northamptonshire—which has left them bottom of Division Two. The club issued an apology to supporters, with director of cricket performance Mark Chilton describing the performances as "not acceptable" and promising necessary changes.
Jennings, who led the side since 2023 and was their top run-scorer last year with over 1000 first-class runs, will continue to captain the T20 Blast side. This season, he has scored 337 runs at 33.70. In a statement, Jennings said the captaincy had been a great honour but that stepping down would help the team move forward, allowing him to focus on contributing with the bat. He pledged full support to Harris and reaffirmed his commitment to the club’s red-ball ambitions.
Harris, currently the leading Championship run-scorer across both divisions with 749 runs at 83.22 including three centuries, will be assisted by vice-captain Josh Bohannon and veteran seamer James Anderson, who is expected to make his first appearance of the season in the upcoming fixture. Chilton thanked Jennings for his service and expressed hope that a new leadership perspective under Harris—who has previously worked with head coach Dale Benkenstein—would bring a fresh impetus to the team.
Lancashire’s struggles this season have been particularly evident at home, where they have managed to bowl an opposition out just once in three games at Emirates Old Trafford. Upcoming fixtures against promotion-chasing Derbyshire and Leicestershire will be crucial in determining if the leadership shake-up sparks a turnaround.
