Shubman Gill made the fastest double century in one-day international history as India overhauled 405 in Guwahati with 39 balls to spare
India's captain finished unbeaten on 223 from 133 balls, reaching 200 in 117 deliveries and carrying his side to 406 for 2 in 43.3 overs at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium. The eight-wicket win gave India an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.
West Indies had posted 405 for 7 from their 50 overs after Gill put them in, built on hundreds from Amir Jangoo, Shai Hope and John Campbell. It was only the sixth time three batters from the same side have reached three figures in a one-day international innings.
Rohit Sharma began the reply with 101 from 75 balls, an innings that took him past 12,000 runs in the format.
Campbell set the tone at the top with 101 from 68 balls, and Hope followed with 104 from 94 in the middle order.
Jangoo made the highest score of the innings, 114 from 77 balls, to push West Indies past 400 for the first time in the series.
Between them the two sides scored 811 runs in the match, and five individual hundreds were made across the two innings.
A total of that size has almost always been decisive. Only once before had a side chased down 400 or more in a one-day international, when South Africa overhauled Australia at the Wanderers in 2006.
India never treated the target as something to be approached in stages. Rohit and Gill put on 255 for the first wicket, and the required rate was under control long before the stand was broken.
Rohit's hundred came from 75 balls and moved him beyond 12,000 ODI runs, the seventh batter and the third from India to reach the mark after Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli.
Kohli made 29 and Ruturaj Gaikwad was unbeaten on 31 at the finish, by which point the result had long stopped being in doubt.
India lost only two wickets in the whole chase, and reached the target with six and a half overs unused.
Gill's double century arrived in 117 balls, taking the record from Ishan Kishan, who had needed 126 against Bangladesh in 2022.
His 223 not out included 26 fours and eight sixes and stands as the highest individual score made in a successful one-day international run chase, passing Glenn Maxwell's 201 against Afghanistan in Mumbai in 2023.
It was also Gill's second ODI double hundred, making him the only India batter other than Rohit to have more than one.
Gill said the scale of the chase had registered in the dressing room before India batted. "At half-time, 400 on the board, there was a bit of pressure," he said. "No matter the pitch or ground, chasing 400 is not easy."
India's answer was to attack from the first over rather than hold wickets back, and the chase was completed inside 44 overs with eight wickets standing.
The win follows India's victory in the first ODI and settles the series with the third match still to come.
For West Indies, a score of 405 that brought three centurions and still ended in defeat leaves little to take forward beyond the batting itself.
India had taken the opening match of the series before arriving in Guwahati, and the third and final ODI is still to be played.
Scorecard: West Indies 405 for 7 (Jangoo 114, Hope 104, Campbell 101) lost to India 406 for 2 in 43.3 overs (Gill 223*, Rohit 101) by eight wickets.
