Shai Hope batted through 48.2 overs for an unbeaten 162 as West Indies overhauled 352 at New Chandigarh, the highest successful run chase in their one-day history
West Indies beat India by five wickets in the third and final one-day international on Saturday, reaching 352 for 5 with 10 balls to spare at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium. India had already taken the series, which closed 2-1.
India batted first after winning the toss and posted 351 for 7, a total built on KL Rahul's unbeaten 129 from 87 balls and 92 from Rohit Sharma. It was the first time in the series that West Indies had been asked to chase.
Hope, who captains and keeps wicket, came in inside the first over and was still there at the end, having faced 143 balls for 17 fours and three sixes. It was his second hundred in successive innings and his 21st in one-day internationals.
India lost both their senior batters in the space of four deliveries. Jayden Seales had Shubman Gill caught behind for 1 and bowled Virat Kohli first ball, leaving the innings two down in the third over.
Rohit and Ruturaj Gaikwad then added the recovery India needed, taking the score to 103 for 2 at the halfway stage without ever breaking clear of the required rate.
Gaikwad made 57 from 69 balls before Seales returned to have him caught by John Campbell. Seales finished with 3-62 from his ten overs, the only Indian wicket-taker to concede fewer than six an over among the seamers.
Rohit fell for 92 from 85 balls, with ten fours and three sixes, caught off Keemo Paul eight short of a hundred. India were still only in the low 200s with fifteen overs left.
Rahul settled that. He hit six sixes in his unbeaten 129 and took 20 runs from Paul in the final over, lifting India from a competitive total to a daunting one. Anshul Kamboj's 17 from nine balls helped at the other end before he was run out.
Paul took 2-72 from nine overs and Alzarri Joseph went wicketless for 68. India scored 248 in the second half of their innings.
Mohammed Siraj bowled Campbell for 10 in the opening overs, bringing Hope to the crease with the asking rate already above seven. He did not accelerate so much as refuse to fall behind it.
Amir Jangoo made 67 from 56 balls in support before he was run out, and Sherfane Rutherford added 24. Paul's 44 from 35 balls late on removed most of what was left to do.
Gudakesh Motie finished unbeaten on 19, taking a flurry of runs off Kamboj in the 48th over to end it. Siraj, Naman Dhir, Gurnoor Brar and Kuldeep Yadav took a wicket each for India, and none of them could slow Hope.
No West Indies side had successfully chased this many in a one-day international before. The previous week in Guwahati they had made 405 for 7, their highest total in the format, only for India to chase down 406.
Hope batted much of his innings in discomfort. "Felt something around the groin area but wanted to fight through till the end," he said afterwards. "Glad we got over the line."
He also pointed to the conditions, saying chasing is "always a lot easier in India, especially with the dew".
India take the series 2-1 and keep an unbeaten home record in bilateral one-day cricket against West Indies, but the margins were narrower than the scoreline suggests. Three totals of 350 or more were made in three matches.
For West Indies, a tour that produced their highest one-day total and now their highest chase ends with one win. Hope has made 266 runs in his last two innings alone.
The two sides meet again in the T20 international series, for which India have already called up Naman Dhir and released Washington Sundar for Ranji Trophy duty.
Scorecard: India 351 for 7 in 50 overs (KL Rahul 129*, Rohit Sharma 92, Ruturaj Gaikwad 57; Jayden Seales 3-62, Keemo Paul 2-72) lost to West Indies 352 for 5 in 48.2 overs (Shai Hope 162*, Amir Jangoo 67, Keemo Paul 44) by five wickets.
