Middlesex surged towards victory at Lord’s thanks to a superb five-wicket haul from Toby Roland-Jones, leaving Gloucestershire with a daunting final-day task.
Roland-Jones returned figures of 5 for 37 to dismantle Gloucestershire’s first innings for 216, enforcing the follow-on with a commanding lead of 229. The veteran seamer, who was among Division Two’s leading wicket-takers last season, once again proved his value with a disciplined and incisive spell.
He was well supported by Zafar Gohar, who claimed 3 for 47 against his former side, while youngster Naavya Sharma chipped in with two wickets.
Gloucestershire showed greater resistance in their second innings but still trailed by 109 runs at stumps, reaching 120 for 3. Joe Phillips (45) and Ben Charlesworth (33) offered some fight with a patient 78-run stand for the second wicket.
Earlier, Roland-Jones struck key blows to break Gloucestershire’s first-innings resistance. He removed James Bracey with a teasing delivery outside off, before dismissing the well-set Miles Hammond for 77, triggering a collapse.
In the second innings, Middlesex kept up the pressure. Sebastian Morgan dismissed captain Cameron Bancroft for a duck, while Roland-Jones returned to remove Charlesworth with a sharp rising delivery.
Despite some resilience, Gloucestershire remain firmly on the back foot. Their hopes now rest on batting out the final day to salvage a draw, a task made difficult by Middlesex’s varied and relentless attack.
With conditions still offering assistance to seamers at Lord’s, Middlesex will be confident of wrapping up the remaining wickets and securing an emphatic opening-round win.
