Rohit Sharma has become the seventh batter in the history of one-day international cricket to pass 12,000 runs, reaching the mark with a hundred in India's record chase in Guwahati
The opener got there with a single off Roston Chase in the 16th over at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Guwahati on Wednesday, in the second one-day international against West Indies. It was his 291st match in the format.
He did not stop there. Rohit went on to 101 from 75 balls, with 10 fours and six sixes, his 35th ODI century and the innings that set India on their way to a chase of 406.
India won by eight wickets with 39 balls unused, taking an unassailable lead in the three-match series.
Rohit arrived in Guwahati 73 runs short of the landmark, and he took them at a pace that left the milestone almost incidental. His hundred came up in 72 balls.
The innings ended when Jayden Seales trapped him in front for 101. India reviewed; the replay showed the ball clipping the top of middle stump, and the decision stood.
By then the chase had been settled in all but arithmetic. Shubman Gill finished unbeaten on 223 from 133 balls, reaching his double hundred in 117 deliveries, and Ruturaj Gaikwad closed it out on 31 not out.
Only six batters had reached 12,000 ODI runs before Wednesday: Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Ricky Ponting, Kumar Sangakkara, Sanath Jayasuriya and Mahela Jayawardena.
Rohit is the third Indian on that list, after Tendulkar and Kohli. Tendulkar remains far clear at the head of it on 18,426 runs.
He has made 35 hundreds and 62 fifties in the format at an average near 50. He is also the only batter with three ODI double centuries, among them the record individual score of 264 against Sri Lanka in Kolkata in 2014.
The same innings carried a second record. Rohit became the first batter to hit 200 sixes in ODI cricket in a single country, all of them in India.
The next names on that list are some way back. Chris Gayle finished his career with 147 ODI sixes in one nation and Martin Guptill with 132.
Four of Rohit's six blows on Wednesday came inside a half-century that took him fewer than 35 balls, at a stage when India needed better than eight an over for the whole innings.
India had put West Indies in and watched them make 405 for 7 from their 50 overs, the highest total any side has made in an ODI and lost. Amir Jangoo made 114 from 77 balls, Shai Hope 104 from 94 and John Campbell 101 from 68.
India answered with 406 for 2 in 43.3 overs, the second-highest successful chase in ODI history, behind South Africa's pursuit of Australia's total at the Wanderers in 2006.
The 811 runs scored across the two innings make it one of the highest-scoring one-day internationals played.
Rohit is 39 and has stepped away from Test and Twenty20 international cricket. He now plays only the 50-over game, with next year's World Cup the point he is building towards.
"The thought will never cross my mind that the business I had is finished," he told JioStar. "As long as you're playing, there is always something to look forward to."
India lead the series 2-0 with one match to play.
Scorecard: West Indies 405 for 7 (Jangoo 114, Hope 104, Campbell 101); India 406 for 2 in 43.3 overs (Gill 223*, Rohit 101). India won by 8 wickets.
