India bowled Sri Lanka out for 45 in 9.5 overs to win the Asian Games semi-final by 124 runs and book a gold-medal match against Pakistan
Having posted 169 for 7 at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin, India needed barely half their overs with the ball. Sri Lanka were dismissed for 45 in 9.5 overs to lose by 124 runs.
Seven wickets were shared by four bowlers and the other three were run-outs. Jasprit Bumrah, Axar Patel and Abhishek Sharma took two each, Washington Sundar one.
The result sends India into the gold-medal match on 3 October, where they will meet Pakistan, who had beaten Bangladesh by six wickets at the same ground earlier in the day. Sri Lanka drop into the bronze-medal play-off.
Sri Lanka chose to bowl, then found themselves chasing 170 against an attack that gave them nothing. Bumrah trapped Jayawardena lbw for 0 from two balls and had De Livera caught behind for 0 from three.
Croospulle was run out without facing a delivery, Ravi Bishnoi beating him with a direct hit. Three of the first four Sri Lankan batters were dismissed without scoring.
By the time the innings settled, the chase had already gone. No partnership of substance followed.
Axar then removed Sahan Arachchige for 9, caught by the 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, and had Korale Gedara caught for 0. He was also the fielder who ran out Muthuthanthrige for 15.
Muthuthanthrige's 15 from 11 balls was the only double-figure score in the innings. Tilak Varma accounted for Konganige with the third run-out, for 5 from 15 balls.
Abhishek Sharma closed the innings out with 2-2, Chamika Karunaratne stumped for 4 and Binura Fernando bowled for 0.
Sri Lanka's 45 included 11 extras — five wides, five leg byes and a bye — more than any batter in the side managed except Muthuthanthrige.
Six of the eleven were dismissed for 0 or 1. Washington Sundar's single wicket was Mahathanthilage, caught for 1 from eight balls.
Vijayakanth finished unbeaten on 0 as the innings ended inside 10 overs, Sri Lanka having faced 59 deliveries in all.
Ishan Kishan had done the heavy lifting earlier, finishing unbeaten on 80 from 46 balls with four fours and five sixes after Sri Lanka put India in.
Sooryavanshi struck 38 at better than a run a ball, and captain Shreyas Iyer made 13. Two Sri Lankan bowlers took two wickets apiece to keep India to 169 for 7.
On a surface that offered the bowlers something all afternoon, 169 proved almost four times what Sri Lanka could manage.
India had reached the semi-final without bowling a ball, their quarter-final washed out, and Sri Lanka arrived the same way. This was the first competitive knockout cricket either side had played at these Games.
Pakistan reached the final by chasing down Bangladesh's 111 for 7 in 11.3 overs, winning by six wickets in a 13-over contest.
India and Pakistan were drawn in opposite halves of the knockout bracket, so the gold-medal match was the only stage at which they could meet.
Both semi-finals were played at Korogi Sports Park, which also hosts the medal matches on 3 October.
Rain has already shaped the knockout stage in Nisshin, and the tournament's washout rule means a final abandoned without a result would be shared, with both finalists taking gold.
Scorecard: India 169 for 7 (Ishan Kishan 80*, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi 38) beat Sri Lanka 45 all out in 9.5 overs (Bumrah 2, Axar Patel 2, Abhishek Sharma 2-2) by 124 runs.
