Richard Thompson Reappointed as ECB Chair Until 2028

Richard Thompson will continue as Chair of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) through to September 2028, following a unanimous reappointment by the board’s independent directors. Initially appointed in 2022 on a five-year term, Thompson’s tenure has been adjusted to fit new governance rules limiting chairs to two three-year terms.

The early confirmation of his second term aims to ensure stability as English cricket navigates key transitions, including the sale of stakes in The Hundred — projected to generate around £500 million — and preparations for hosting the Women's T20 World Cup in 2026.

Thompson, a former Surrey chair, has been a central figure alongside ECB CEO Richard Gould in pushing forward these initiatives. Praised for his inclusive leadership, Thompson reaffirmed his commitment to growing the sport and making it more accessible and representative of the wider community.
