Relentless Colombo Rain Forces Abandonment of New Zealand–Pakistan Super Eight Clash

The opening Super Eight fixture between New Zealand and Pakistan was abandoned without a ball bowled after persistent rain in Colombo refused to ease.

What began as a light drizzle at toss time steadily intensified, leaving officials with little choice but to call off the match after waiting more than two hours beyond the scheduled start. With puddles forming on the covers and no sign of improvement in overhead conditions, the umpires made the inevitable decision to share the points.

There had already been strong forecasts of showers in the lead-up to the contest. Pakistan’s evening training session on the eve of the match had been cancelled due to rain, and the weather once again played spoilsport at a crucial juncture in the tournament.

Pakistan won the toss, with captain Salman Agha opting to bat first. However, even as the captains were speaking, drizzle began to fall and ground staff quickly moved to protect the square. From that moment, the prospects of play diminished steadily.

Pakistan had made one change to their XI, leaving out Khawaja Nafay and bringing in Fakhar Zaman. New Zealand made three alterations, including the return of their captain Mitchell Santner to the side.

While both teams get off the mark in the Super Eight stage, the washout leaves little margin for error in the remainder of the group. Pakistan are scheduled to face England on Tuesday and Sri Lanka a week later, while New Zealand will take on Sri Lanka on Wednesday and England on Friday — with all matches in the group set to be played in Sri Lanka.
