Rashid Khan limits Tests to protect career after back injury

Rashid Khan has revealed that he will significantly limit his appearances in Test cricket, opting to play just one match a year in order to prolong his international career.

The decision comes in the wake of a serious back injury in 2023, which forced the Afghanistan star to reassess his workload. Rashid admitted that medical advice played a crucial role in shaping his approach, with doctors warning that continued participation in the longer format could jeopardise his future in the game.

Despite those warnings, Rashid pushed himself during a Test against Zimbabwe in 2025, bowling a heavy workload that raised concerns. Reflecting on that experience, he acknowledged the physical toll of red-ball cricket and the risks involved.

Since then, he has shifted his priorities, choosing to carefully manage his body and focus on formats that allow him to contribute consistently without overexertion. While Test cricket remains important to him, he believes limiting his appearances is the only way to sustain a long career for Afghanistan.

Rashid also pointed out the practical challenges for teams like Afghanistan in the Test arena, where opportunities are limited and long-term goals such as the World Test Championship are harder to target. This, combined with physical demands, has influenced his decision.

The legspinner remains fully committed to white-ball cricket, particularly ODIs, where he sees himself playing a major role in the years ahead, including the build-up to the 2027 World Cup. His performances in franchise leagues like the IPL further underline his continued impact in shorter formats.

Since his Test debut in 2018, Rashid has taken 45 wickets in just six matches, highlighting his effectiveness. However, preserving his fitness now takes precedence as he aims to remain a key figure for Afghanistan across formats.
