Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) captain Rajat Patidar has been fined INR 12 lakh for maintaining a slow over-rate during his team’s 12-run win over Mumbai Indians (MI) at Wankhede Stadium on Monday night. This marks RCB’s first over-rate offence of the 2025 IPL season.

Patidar, who has impressed in his debut season as captain, is also RCB’s second-highest run-scorer so far with 161 runs in four innings — just behind Virat Kohli’s 164. His aggressive approach with the bat and proactive leadership have drawn praise from experts and fans alike.

Smart Captaincy Wins Praise

Patidar's tactical nous was on display against MI, particularly with his handling of the bowling unit. Ambati Rayudu, speaking on ESPNcricinfo’s TimeOut show, applauded the decision to bring back Bhuvneshwar Kumar at a critical point in MI’s chase, calling it “a brilliant move.”

Sanjay Bangar also highlighted Patidar’s decision-making: “Holding Krunal back for the final over was smart — you don’t want him bowling the 19th when someone like Hazlewood has just 10 or 12 to defend.”

Rayudu further noted that Patidar looked calm under pressure and didn’t require much intervention from Virat Kohli — a noticeable shift from previous seasons.

RCB’s Season So Far

With three wins in six games, RCB are positioned in the mid-table and will next face Delhi Capitals (DC) at home in Bengaluru on Thursday evening.

Patidar now joins the list of IPL 2025 captains fined for slow over-rates, alongside Hardik Pandya (MI), Riyan Parag (RR), and Rishabh Pant (LSG).
