Will Pucovski Retires from Cricket Due to Ongoing Concussion Struggles: "A Humongous Disappointment"
Will Pucovski has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket at the age of 27, citing long-standing concussion issues. Describing it as a “humongous disappointment that is hard to deal with,” the former Australian Test opener made the emotional announcement on Melbourne’s SEN radio.
Pucovski, who was once considered one of Australia’s brightest red-ball prospects, played just one Test match — against India in 2021 — after a stellar rise through the ranks of domestic cricket with Victoria. However, a series of concussions, dating back to his teenage years playing Australian Rules Football, derailed what many believed would be a long and prolific international career.
The latest and most severe concussion came in March 2024, when Pucovski was struck by a bouncer from Tasmania's Riley Meredith in a Sheffield Shield match. He hadn’t played since. An independent medical panel later advised him to retire due to the frequency and severity of his head injuries, which were estimated to be in the mid-teens.
Though the medical recommendation came in 2024, Pucovski took his time to evaluate the situation, considering medical advice, his contract situation, and the long-term implications for his health before making a final decision.
“I wish I was speaking under better circumstances,” Pucovski said during his radio appearance. “I’m not going to be playing cricket again. It’s been a really difficult year... The simple message is I won’t be playing cricket at any level again.”
Pucovski revealed that his symptoms following the latest concussion were the worst he’d experienced. At one point, even basic day-to-day tasks became a struggle.
“In the months after the concussion, even walking around the house was tough. I was sleeping a lot and couldn't contribute much. It’s been a long, hard year, and many symptoms just never went away,” he said.
Pucovski had shown signs of resurgence during the 2023-24 season, playing more first-class matches than he ever had in a single campaign and scoring a century in his penultimate match against New South Wales.
“After that hundred in Sydney, I thought things were finally clicking. I’d put in so much work off the field. I didn’t just want to play for Australia — I wanted to be a leader in the batting group. I wanted to play 100 Tests,” he said. “Unfortunately, one is where it ends.”
Even now, Pucovski is dealing with ongoing symptoms — headaches, fatigue, motion sickness, and a strange sensitivity to movement on his left side that causes nausea and dizziness.
“It’s complicated,” he said. “There are the mental health effects, but also the physical ones. I still get regular headaches and struggle with motion. I know what I was like before all these concussions and who I am now — and my family and friends see the difference too. That’s scary.”
Although the panel had urged retirement, Pucovski resisted making the call until he had tried everything he could to recover.
“I didn't want to give up until I was symptom-free. I’ve spent countless hours trying to find answers and understand what’s happening with my brain. But things haven’t changed. I held on to the dream as long as I could, but at some point, you want to feel better and live your life normally.”
Ultimately, he said, “I just don't want to risk doing any more damage to my brain than I've already done.”
Despite retiring from playing, Pucovski isn't walking away from the sport entirely. He has already committed to coaching his Premier Cricket club Melbourne from the 2025-26 season and has also dabbled in television commentary — a role he may return to.
In first-class cricket, Pucovski finishes with 2,350 runs at an average of 45.19, including seven centuries — three of which were double hundreds — underlining the talent that once made him one of Australia’s most exciting young cricketers.
