Rain Ends SRH Playoff Hopes as Season of Missed Adjustments Continues

Sunrisers Hyderabad’s slim hopes of making the IPL 2025 playoffs were officially extinguished after rain washed out their match against Delhi Capitals in Hyderabad. After restricting DC to just 133 for 7—a strong bowling performance that finally showed some promise—SRH were in a commanding position before the weather intervened. The no-result left them stranded at nine points with only three games remaining, and even a clean sweep would leave them on 13—short of the four teams already above them on 14 or more.

The washout was a fitting reflection of SRH’s underwhelming campaign, one that began with promise but quickly spiraled into inconsistency, tactical rigidity, and poor adaptability to conditions. Their ultra-aggressive batting strategy, which propelled them to the final last season, became a double-edged sword this year. They kicked off with fireworks—an imposing 286 for 6 against Rajasthan Royals—but failed to sustain that approach as oppositions adapted and conditions shifted.

Former New Zealand wicketkeeper Katey Martin noted on ESPNcricinfo Time Out that SRH took too long to realize their one-dimensional batting strategy wasn’t suited to this year’s playing conditions. “That was an improved performance, but sometimes it's a little bit too late,” she said. “It probably took them halfway through the tournament to realise their approach with the bat might not necessarily have to be similar to what worked last year.”

The limitations of their “one style fits all” batting template were further exposed as Hyderabad’s pitches proved less conducive to their power-hitting formula than expected. Head coach Daniel Vettori admitted after the DC game that the home conditions hadn’t matched the team's pre-season expectations, complicating matters for their top-order hitters.

Former India pacer Varun Aaron echoed the sentiment, pointing out that teams like Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians have built squads with flexibility in mind. “You can't be like, 'We're going to play one style,' because if conditions don't support you, you're going to be found wanting—which they have been this year,” Aaron said. “GT and MI have multiple options for varying conditions. SRH didn’t.”

While SRH had flashes of brilliance—like explosive knocks from Heinrich Klaasen, Ishan Kishan, and Abhishek Sharma—their predictability eventually made them easier to counter. “The more exposure [the batters] got, the more bowlers figured out how to bowl to them,” Martin added. “And being conditions-dependent, they didn’t make those adjustments as well.”

With their campaign effectively over, SRH will likely enter a period of introspection and rebuilding. Despite possessing one of the most feared line-ups on paper, their lack of tactical flexibility, poor use of home advantage, and overreliance on a single batting blueprint ultimately cost them a playoff berth.
