Rabada Returns to IPL After Suspension as Gujarat Titans Eye Playoff Push

South Africa fast bowler Kagiso Rabada has rejoined the Gujarat Titans squad in India and is available for selection ahead of their crucial IPL 2025 clash against Mumbai Indians. Rabada, who had been suspended for 30 days after testing positive for a recreational drug, returned to training with the team on Monday at the Wankhede Stadium. Gujarat Titans' director of cricket, Vikram Solanki, confirmed that Rabada has completed all required protocols and expressed sincere regret over the incident, calling it an “error in judgment.”

Rabada was handed a one-month ban by the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS), commuted from a potential three-month suspension in accordance with World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) guidelines. He left the IPL in early April, shortly after being notified of the positive result from a test taken during the SA20 league in January. Despite the circumstances, GT remained tight-lipped at the time, citing “personal reasons” for Rabada’s absence — a move that was criticized by former players for lack of transparency.

Solanki, however, praised Rabada's maturity in handling the aftermath and emphasized that all parties involved had adhered strictly to procedure. “Kagiso has expressed regret and taken responsibility,” Solanki said. “His statement speaks volumes about his character, and he is very much looking forward to playing the game he loves again. The team stands by him, and our focus is now on cricket.”

Rabada trained briefly with his teammates, including Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna, and had what appeared to be a heart-to-heart chat with head coach Ashish Nehra. He also spent time interacting with teammates like Rashid Khan and former MI franchise-mate Trent Boult, and even spoke with Akash Ambani, the MI team owner. While Rabada did not train extensively, the mood around his return appeared positive and supportive.

Despite his absence, GT have surged to fourth on the points table with seven wins in ten matches, establishing themselves as strong playoff contenders. Their bowling unit has been a revelation in Rabada’s absence, with Prasidh Krishna leading the Purple Cap race with 19 wickets, Mohammed Siraj close behind with 14, and left-arm spinner Sai Kishore contributing both wickets (12) and control (economy rate of 8.35), especially as Rashid Khan struggles for form this season.

Solanki credited the team's bowling depth and their ability to function as a unit in Rabada’s absence. “Often people talk about partnerships in batting, but bowling partnerships are just as crucial. The way our bowlers have stepped up together has been phenomenal and speaks volumes about the group,” he said.

GT had invested heavily in Rabada, securing him for INR 10.75 crore in the last auction, banking on his pace and experience to lead their attack. With the team already performing well without him, Rabada's return could further strengthen an already dangerous bowling lineup as they enter the final phase of the league.

Rabada, meanwhile, is determined not to let his off-field mistake define him. According to Solanki, the fast bowler made it clear to his teammates that he does not want this episode to become a distraction. “He spoke very eloquently and took ownership,” Solanki said. “It’s our job to support players — in form, or when dealing with personal challenges. Kagiso has our full backing.”

With a key match looming against Mumbai Indians, all eyes will be on whether Rabada is slotted straight back into the XI and how he performs after a month away.
