Indian legspinner Rahul Chahar is set to return to Surrey for an eight-match stint in the County Championship this summer, following a memorable debut for the club last season.
Chahar made an immediate impact during his short spell in 2025, claiming remarkable match figures of 10 for 118 against Hampshire, including a stunning 8 for 51 in the second innings. His performance played a key role in Surrey’s victory and helped secure their second-place finish in the Championship standings.
The 25-year-old will first feature in IPL 2026 with Chennai Super Kings before joining Surrey ahead of their fixture against Hampshire at The Oval on June 7. His return strengthens Surrey’s spin attack for the latter half of the season as they aim to push for the title.
Expressing his enthusiasm, Chahar said he was eager to rejoin a successful setup and contribute to more victories. “I really enjoyed my short spell in 2025 and jumped at the opportunity to come back,” he said, highlighting his positive experience with the club.
Surrey’s director of cricket Alec Stewart praised Chahar’s previous impact and welcomed his return, noting his ability to influence matches and deliver under pressure.
Chahar’s re-signing continues Surrey’s strategy of strengthening their squad with impactful overseas players. For the first half of the season, Australian allrounder Sean Abbott will serve as their primary overseas signing across both the County Championship and T20 Blast.
With proven success in English conditions and confidence from his previous stint, Chahar is expected to play a crucial role in Surrey’s campaign. His ability to take wickets in clusters could once again prove decisive as the county looks to convert strong performances into silverware this season.
