Punjab Kings Eye Top-Two Spot as Playoff-Race Heats Up Against Struggling LSG

As the IPL 2025 league stage enters its final stretch, Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) square off in a pivotal contest on Sunday that could determine their playoff fate. PBKS, currently placed fourth, are riding the momentum of a strong win over Chennai Super Kings, while LSG, in sixth, are in desperate need of a turnaround after a string of defeats and a worrying dip in form from key players.

For PBKS, the setting couldn’t be better. The match will be played in Dharamsala, their second home ground, where the team also held its pre-season camp. With three matches scheduled here, head coach Ricky Ponting has stressed the importance of adapting quickly and exploiting familiarity. The Indian top order has been a revelation for PBKS. Rishabh Pant has moved up the order to No. 4 but is yet to find fluency. Nicholas Pooran, after a blazing start to the season, has stumbled in recent outings, with fast bowlers successfully targeting him.

Yuzvendra Chahal’s form resurgence gives PBKS a major edge. He’s claimed 11 wickets in his last four games and will be central again, especially considering his good record against both Pant and Pooran. PBKS might also lean on Arshdeep Singh, who has a knack for picking up early wickets, particularly against the likes of Markram and Marsh.

LSG, on the other hand, will look to Mayank Yadav to strike early. Returning from injury, he bowled more slower deliveries than ever before in his last outing, showing signs of adapting to conditions and fitness demands. With six days of rest, he should be primed for a full spell.

Historically, Dharamsala has produced high scores with an average first-innings total of 201 since 2023. However, chasing has proven difficult, with only one team winning while batting second in the last four matches. Light showers may cool things off during the day, and the temperature will dip to around 16°C by match time, offering welcome relief to players used to the subcontinental heat.

For PBKS, a win here would keep their hopes of a top-two finish alive. For LSG, it’s about survival and rediscovering the form that once had them in contention. As the playoffs loom, both sides enter Dharamsala with pressure mounting, but opportunity knocking.
