Dhoni Takes Responsibility as CSK Fall Short in Final-Over Thriller Against RCB

In a dramatic IPL 2025 clash at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni took full responsibility for his side’s narrow two-run defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru, after failing to finish a tense chase in the final over. Needing just 35 off the last three overs and 15 off the final six balls, CSK stumbled under pressure, ultimately coming up short despite big hitters at the crease.

Dhoni joined Ravindra Jadeja in the 17th over with the equation still manageable. Though he briefly lifted CSK’s hopes with a six off Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the 19th, he fell to a full delivery from Yash Dayal early in the final over, leaving too much for the tail. Even Shivam Dube’s powerful swat for six off a beamer couldn’t salvage the result.

Speaking at the post-match presentation, Dhoni admitted he should have done more:
“I felt I should have converted maybe a couple of more shots, and that would have eased the pressure… So, I would take the blame for it.”

RCB, who posted a commanding 213, were powered by a stunning late assault from Romario Shepherd, who smashed a 14-ball 53* in a late carnage that yielded 54 runs in the last two overs. Dhoni acknowledged the shift in momentum and admitted CSK’s bowlers were unable to execute their yorkers under pressure. He urged more focus on death bowling, especially with bowlers like Pathirana, who have the pace to vary their plans when yorkers misfire.

RCB’s victory was sealed by Yash Dayal, who once again held his nerve against CSK in a high-pressure final over—just as he did in the 2024 season. RCB batting coach Dinesh Karthik hailed Dayal’s execution under pressure, praising his meticulous preparation and composure.

“Yash being Yash, the way he delivered, [it was] outstanding,” Karthik said, highlighting his work ethic, consistency in meetings, and mental strength.

The win took RCB to the top of the table and dealt a blow to CSK's playoff push. With Dhoni owning up to his share of the loss and CSK still chasing consistency in finishing games, the road ahead in this IPL remains tight and unforgiving.
