PSL 2025 to Proceed Amid Rising India-Pakistan Tensions Following Cross-Border Strikes

Despite heightened geopolitical tensions between India and Pakistan following a series of Indian missile strikes across the border early Wednesday morning, the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2025 will continue as scheduled. The strikes, which India claimed were in retaliation for the Pahalgam terror attack in Kashmir that killed 26 civilians in April, have significantly escalated hostilities between the two nuclear-armed neighbours. Pakistan, denying any role in the attack, claimed the missile response caused 26 casualties on its side and that it downed Indian aircraft in a retaliatory move.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), in a brief and notably apolitical statement, confirmed that the league matches would go ahead. No mention was made of the military developments, and the PCB reiterated its focus on maintaining the schedule. Wednesday night’s game between Islamabad United and Quetta Gladiators in Rawalpindi — a city not far from the Line of Control — is still expected to proceed, with the venue also slated to host the next three fixtures.

Behind the scenes, however, the mood is understandably tense. Among the most concerned are the foreign players in the PSL, particularly those from England. While some players have expressed a desire to leave due to the volatile situation, others are opting to stay on for now. The Professional Cricketers' Association (PCA) is reportedly in ongoing discussions with all 15 English players involved, with advice being taken from UK security officials and the Foreign Office. Presently, those advisories have not changed significantly for the PSL host cities, but the situation remains fluid and under close review.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is also closely observing the developments. It has, for the time being, allowed its players — Nahid Rana and Rishad Hossain — to remain in Pakistan. The BCB president has personally reached out to both the players and PSL authorities to ensure their security and mental well-being, stressing that any decision to recall players would be based on evolving assessments.

While most franchises report that their overseas players are staying put, officials admit that a shift in the geopolitical landscape — or in player perception — could lead to abrupt withdrawals. For now, the PSL’s continuation reflects a determination to keep sport insulated from political conflict, but its fate may ultimately hinge on whether the military escalation stabilizes or worsens in the coming days.
