Injury Forces Padikkal Out of IPL 2025, Mayank Agarwal Returns to RCB; DC Sign Sediqullah Atal as Brook’s Replacement

Royal Challengers Bengaluru have suffered a blow ahead of a crucial phase in IPL 2025, with opener Devdutt Padikkal ruled out due to a hamstring injury. His consistent performances this season had added a vital dimension to RCB’s top order, especially his left-handed presence among predominantly right-handed batters. In 10 innings this season, Padikkal scored 247 runs at an average of 27.44 and an impressive strike rate of 150.60—marking a significant bounce-back from a dismal 2024 campaign.

Padikkal credited his resurgence to the technical work done with RCB's batting coach Dinesh Karthik and head coach Andy Flower, acknowledging that adjustments in his game had brought results. Unfortunately, his season now ends prematurely, just as RCB are on the cusp of qualifying for the playoffs.

To fill the void, RCB have roped in Karnataka skipper Mayank Agarwal for INR 1 crore. Agarwal, now 34, returns to the franchise where he began his IPL journey. He previously represented RCB from 2011 to 2013, scoring 492 runs in 35 matches at a strike rate of 128.79. While his recent IPL form has been inconsistent, his leadership experience and familiarity with the Chinnaswamy Stadium may prove valuable in the high-pressure games to come.

Meanwhile, Delhi Capitals have announced the signing of Afghan batter Sediqullah Atal as a replacement for Harry Brook, who had withdrawn from IPL duties for a second consecutive season. Brook’s repeated absence could result in a two-year ban from the tournament under league rules. Atal, who joins for INR 1.25 crore, is a rising left-handed top-order talent with solid T20 credentials: 1507 runs in 49 games at an average of 34.25 and a strike rate of 131.27.

Atal made a notable impression at the Champions Trophy earlier this year, scoring a composed 85 against Australia in Lahore. He also featured in the SA20 for MI Cape Town, stepping in for Ben Stokes and making a brief but impactful contribution. Delhi coach Hemang Badani welcomed his signing, calling him a promising addition to DC’s batting depth at a pivotal moment in the tournament.

With RCB pushing for a playoff berth and DC trying to stay competitive, these replacements could have a significant influence on their respective teams’ fortunes in the final stretch of the season.
