Piyush Chawla Announces Retirement After Two-Decade Cricket Career

Veteran legspinner Piyush Chawla has officially announced his retirement from professional cricket, bringing the curtains down on a 20-year career that saw him represent India across formats and become a mainstay in domestic and IPL cricket. The 36-year-old played 3 Tests, 25 ODIs, and 7 T20Is for India, with his last international appearance coming during the 2012 T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka.

Chawla's final domestic outing came during the 2024-25 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, in a last push to return to the IPL. However, after going unsold at the mega auction, he transitioned to a broadcasting role during IPL 2025.

In the IPL, Chawla was one of the league’s most consistent bowlers, finishing with 192 wickets in 192 matches, making him the fourth-highest wicket-taker in IPL history. He played for four major franchises – Punjab Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, Chennai Super Kings, and Mumbai Indians – and was instrumental in KKR’s 2014 title win, famously hitting the winning runs in the final.

Chawla first made headlines at 16 when he bowled Sachin Tendulkar with a googly in the 2005 Challenger Trophy. A year later, he debuted in Tests against England. Between 2007 and 2011, he was part of several iconic Indian squads, including the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup-winning teams.

Domestically, he represented Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat, taking 446 first-class wickets in 137 matches. In a heartfelt retirement message on Instagram, Chawla thanked his coaches and reflected on a “blessed” journey.

“Though I step away from the crease, cricket will always live with me,” Chawla wrote. “I now look forward to embarking on a new journey, carrying the lessons and spirit of this beautiful game.”
