PBKS Face Must-Win Clash Against LSG as Playoff Dreams Near Breaking Point

PBKS Face Must-Win Clash Against LSG as Playoff Dreams Near Breaking Point

Punjab Kings head into a do-or-die encounter against Lucknow Super Giants with their IPL 2026 playoff hopes hanging by the thinnest of threads after a dramatic collapse in form during the second half of the season.

PBKS began the campaign looking like genuine title contenders, winning six of their first completed matches and briefly appearing capable of finishing as league leaders. However, a disastrous run of six consecutive defeats has pushed them to the edge of elimination.

The equation is now straightforward for Punjab — defeat LSG and hope Mumbai Indians beat Rajasthan Royals in the final round of league matches. Any loss against Lucknow, however, will officially end PBKS’ campaign.

Despite their struggles, Punjab may take confidence from their recent dominance over LSG, having won each of their last three meetings. Lucknow themselves sit at the bottom of the table despite showing flashes of brilliance throughout the tournament.

One of LSG’s biggest positives has been the explosive form of Mitchell Marsh, although he is expected to miss the match. In his absence, much of the responsibility will fall on the in-form Josh Inglis, whose fearless batting at the top of the order has transformed LSG’s powerplay scoring rate.

Punjab, meanwhile, desperately need opener Priyansh Arya to rediscover his early-season form after a sharp decline in returns over the last few matches. LSG’s pace attack featuring Mohammed Shami, Mayank Yadav and Mohsin Khan is expected to target Arya with short-pitched bowling, an area where he has struggled recently.

Punjab’s bowling unit has also been a major concern, statistically emerging as the least effective attack in the tournament this season. Captain Shreyas Iyer and coach Ricky Ponting will now hope their squad can rediscover the fearless cricket that defined their strong start.

With elimination staring them in the face, PBKS must finally halt their losing streak to keep their playoff aspirations alive.
