Nottingham, July 6: Nottinghamshire have signed Sri Lanka left-arm pacer Binura Fernando for the remainder of their Vitality Blast campaign, replacing Mohammad Ali, who has left the club after earning a call-up to Pakistan's Test squad for the tour of the Caribbean.
Fernando will be available for Nottinghamshire's final two North Group fixtures—against Leicestershire and Yorkshire—as well as the knockout stages, with the club currently sitting comfortably at the top of the standings and on course for a quarter-final berth.
The 29-year-old arrives for his first stint in county cricket, bringing valuable international experience to Nottinghamshire's pace attack. Fernando has claimed 26 wickets for Sri Lanka in T20 internationals and is expected to add variety with his left-arm pace during the business end of the competition.
"I'm thrilled to be joining Nottinghamshire for the Vitality Blast," Fernando said. "It's a fantastic opportunity to represent such a prestigious club. I can't wait to meet the players, supporters, and contribute to the team's success."
Mohammad Ali departs after an impressive campaign in which he picked up 19 wickets in 10 matches at an average of 16.21, making him one of the competition's leading wicket-takers before his national call-up.
Nottinghamshire head coach Peter Moores praised both bowlers, saying Fernando's international pedigree and skillset would strengthen the team's bowling unit, while acknowledging Ali's outstanding contribution during his time at the club.
"It will be a shame to lose Mohammad Ali, who has done really well for us, but we wish him all the best with Pakistan and we're excited to have Binura join us for the remainder of the tournament," Moores said.
