Nicholas Pooran Retires from International Cricket at 29

Nicholas Pooran, the former West Indies white-ball captain, has announced his retirement from international cricket at the age of 29, bringing an end to a career that saw him amass 1983 runs in 61 ODIs and 2275 runs in 106 T20Is. Despite opting out of West Indies’ recent T20I series against England and not featuring in ODIs since their exit from the 2023 World Cup qualifiers, Pooran’s decision came as a surprise, especially after expressing hopes of playing 100 more T20Is during his 100th cap last November. In an emotional statement on social media, Pooran reflected on his journey, expressing gratitude to fans, family, teammates, and West Indies cricket, while emphasizing his enduring love for the game. Debuting in 2016 against Pakistan in T20Is and later making his ODI debut in 2019 against England, Pooran’s international career included a stint as captain, though he stepped down following West Indies’ disappointing 2022 T20 World Cup campaign. His final international appearance came in December 2024 against Bangladesh. Pooran enjoyed a prolific 2024, smashing a record 170 sixes in a calendar year and ending IPL 2025 with 524 runs at a blistering strike rate of 196.25. Though expected to play a key role in the 2026 T20 World Cup, he will now continue his career in various franchise leagues including MLC, The Hundred, ILT20, CPL, and IPL. Cricket West Indies acknowledged his contributions, extending gratitude for his service and wishing him success in the next phase of his career.
