Kamindu Mendis and Chamari Athapaththu Shine at Sri Lanka Cricket Awards 2024

Kamindu Mendis and Chamari Athapaththu were the biggest winners at the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) Awards 2024, held for the first time since 2017 to honor performances from the 2024 calendar year. Kamindu, who amassed 1049 runs at an average of 74.92 in Tests, was named Men’s Cricketer of the Year, capping off a year where only four batters worldwide outscored him, none of whom played as few as his nine Tests. Chamari Athapaththu swept six awards, including Women’s Cricketer of the Year, after a phenomenal year in which she scored 720 T20I runs — second only to Smriti Mandhana — while also taking 21 wickets, along with 458 runs and nine wickets in ODIs. In men’s white-ball cricket, Kusal Mendis and Pathum Nissanka split the batting awards, while Wanindu Hasaranga claimed three honors as the best bowler in both ODIs and T20Is and best T20I allrounder. Prabath Jayasuriya was named best Test bowler after taking 48 wickets in nine Tests, and Dhananjaya de Silva was awarded best Test allrounder. Charith Asalanka was recognized as the best ODI allrounder, while Janith Liyanage won the Emerging Player of the Year award after a strong debut year. The ceremony also honored domestic performances, with Rashmi Silva, Harshitha Samarawickrama, Nilakshika Silva, Chamika Karunaratne, Akila Dananjaya, Pawantha Weerasinghe, Dilshan Munaweera, Krishan Sanjula, Thanuka Dabare, Dilum Sudeera, Sahan Kosala, and Ravindu Fernando all recognized for their contributions. Additionally, lifetime achievement awards were presented, along with honors for match referee of the year (Pradeep Jeyapragash) and umpire of the year (Chamara de Zoysa). The event was graced by several current and former cricketers, with Sri Lanka’s sports minister Sunil Kumara Gamage serving as the guest of honour.
