Nayeem Hasan reaches 50 Test wickets but Bangladesh slide to 79 for 6 in Mirpur

Nayeem Hasan reached 50 Test wickets and finished with 4-33 to earn Bangladesh a first-innings lead in Mirpur, only for their batting to fall away a second time
Nayeem Hasan bowled only three overs on the second day of the first Test against West Indies. Brought back on the third morning, the off-spinner took 4-33 from 10.5 overs to end the innings at 245 and give Bangladesh a first-innings lead of 27.
His dismissal of Shamar Joseph, caught behind off an under-edge, was his 50th Test wicket, reached in his 16th Test. He is the eighth Bangladesh bowler to the mark.
Whatever that advantage was worth, Bangladesh gave most of it back. They slipped to 79 for 6 in 29 overs in their second innings, a lead of 106, having lost Mominul Haque to concussion earlier in the day.
A spell that ended the innings
West Indies began the third day with a sixth-wicket stand between Justin Greaves and captain Roston Chase that passed 50 and threatened to turn a deficit into a lead.
Nayeem ended it with the last ball before lunch, trapping Greaves lbw for 46.
After the interval he took Joseph and Jomel Warrican in the same over, Warrican lbw after losing a review, then had Jayden Seales caught at mid-off by Mehidy Hasan Miraz to close the innings.
Chase finished unbeaten on 43, stranded as the tail went. Tagenarine Chanderpaul had made 56 and John Campbell 54 earlier in an innings that never quite built on either.
Fewer deliveries than Miraz
Nayeem's 50 wickets came in 2,856 deliveries, a figure reports in Dhaka put ahead of Mehidy Hasan Miraz as the quickest by a Bangladesh spinner on that measure.
Miraz got to 50 in 13 Tests against Nayeem's 16, so the record turns on balls bowled rather than matches played.
Among Bangladesh's spinners, Taijul Islam leads the list with 275 Test wickets, ahead of Shakib Al Hasan on 246 and Miraz on 231.
Mominul withdrawn after a blow at short leg
Mominul Haque was struck on the head at short leg in the 78th over of the West Indies innings, when a ball from Mehidy came off Joshua Bishop's hands before Mominul could hold the catch.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board said he "had suffered a head injury while fielding in the 78th over of the West Indies first innings" and that "he has been replaced by Jaker Ali Anik as the concussion sub".
Earlier in the same innings Mominul had put down Chase at short leg, off Nayeem, when the West Indies captain was on 27.
Jaker Ali had not played a Test since the series against Sri Lanka in June 2025, and came into this one without being selected for it.
Chase takes three in the second innings
Bangladesh lost four wickets inside 13 overs. Shamar Joseph had Tanzid Hasan Tamim lbw for a duck, and Chase took the next three.
Shadman Islam, who made 105 in the first innings, went for 13. Tawhid Hridoy was caught by Seales for a second-ball duck.
Najmul Hossain Shanto was lbw for 10 and reviewed without success, the replays returning three reds.
Rain ended the second session ten minutes early with Bangladesh 34 for 4 and Jaker Ali and Litton Das together. Two further wickets had gone by the time the score reached 79.
A lead of 106 to work with
Bangladesh's first innings had taken the same shape. They were 213 for 3 before losing their last seven wickets for 59, Warrican taking 5-53.
Twice now a position of some control has been handed back inside a session, and on both occasions it was the spinners who collected.
A lead of 106 with four second-innings wickets standing leaves the Test close to even, with two days still to play.
Scorecard: Bangladesh 272 and 79 for 6 (29 overs); West Indies 245. Bangladesh lead by 106 runs.
