Jacob Duffy takes 4-23 as New Zealand beat India by 87 runs at Eden Park

Jacob Duffy removed two batters in the opening over and finished with 4-23 as India were held to 172 for 9 chasing 260 at Eden Park

New Zealand beat India by 87 runs in the fourth T20 international in Auckland, their first win of the series, after Glenn Phillips made 107 from 49 balls to carry the hosts to 259 for 7.

India won the toss, put New Zealand in, and were two wickets down inside the first over of the reply. They finished on 172 for 9 without a batter reaching fifty.

India still lead the five-match series 3-1, with the last T20I at Seddon Park in Hamilton on Sunday.

Duffy strikes in the first over

Sanju Samson went in the second ball of the chase, caught behind by Tim Seifert for 4, and Ishan Kishan followed for a duck in the same over, caught and bowled.

Duffy returned to take Naman Dhir and Arshdeep Singh as well, closing with 4-23 from his four overs.

India were 4 for 2 with 19 overs still to bowl at a target of 260, and no stand after that reached fifty.

No partnership for India

Abhishek Sharma hit 27 from 15 balls before Matthew Fisher had him caught by Mitchell Santner.

Shreyas Iyer, India's captain, made 22 from 11 before Adam Milne bowled him, and Nitish Kumar Reddy added 21 from 10 before Santner had him caught by Michael Bracewell.

Dhir's 28 from 13 balls ended at 121 for 7 to a relay catch at long-on: Santner took it, threw the ball back infield as his momentum carried him over the rope, and Nathan Smith lunged to complete the catch.

Tilak Varma top-scored with 35 from 35 balls and was the last of the specialist batters to go, caught behind off Fisher in the 19th over. Prince Yadav finished 18 not out.

Fisher and Santner took two wickets each and Milne one.

Phillips and Bracewell take the game away

Phillips reached his hundred from 46 balls and hit 10 sixes and six fours in all, and was named player of the match.

"We took most of the risks and it was fantastic," Phillips said afterwards. "It was easier to hit with the wind, but the dimensions do play a role here."

He and Bracewell, who made 65 from 25 balls and reached his fifty in 19, added 115 in 40 balls for the fifth wicket. Finn Allen made 31 from 17 and Daryl Mitchell 24 from nine.

New Zealand's 259 for 7 is their highest total in T20 internationals, beating the 254 for 5 they made against Scotland four years ago, and the highest any side has made against India, beating England's 257 for 3 at Southampton earlier this year.

India's bowling and a milestone for Arshdeep

Nitish Kumar Reddy conceded 64 from his four overs, including 32 in a single over in which Phillips hit four consecutive sixes and Reddy bowled a no-ball.

Mayank Yadav was the most effective of the Indian bowlers with 3-48, dismissing Seifert and trapping Mitchell lbw.

Arshdeep Singh took 1-38 and became the first India bowler to reach 150 wickets in T20 internationals.

Hamilton to come

India had already taken the series, winning the first three matches by four wickets twice in Christchurch and by six wickets in Wellington.

New Zealand's win ends that run and gives them the chance to close the tour at 3-2 at Seddon Park on Sunday.

Scorecard: New Zealand 259 for 7 (Phillips 107, Bracewell 65; Mayank Yadav 3-48) beat India 172 for 9 (Tilak Varma 35, Dhir 28; Duffy 4-23) by 87 runs
