Kolkata Knight Riders head coach Abhishek Nayar believes IPL 2026 presents a “season of opportunities” as the team looks to move on from the retirement of franchise legend Andre Russell.
Russell, who amassed over 2500 runs and 120 wickets for KKR since 2014, leaves behind a significant void. However, Nayar sees this transition as a chance for others to step up, particularly Rinku Singh and Ramandeep Singh, who are expected to take on finishing roles.
To strengthen their squad, KKR secured Cameron Green for a record fee at the auction, adding to an already formidable overseas batting group that includes Rovman Powell, Tim Seifert, Finn Allen and Rachin Ravindra.
Nayar emphasised that the squad’s depth offers flexibility but also presents a challenge in finding the right combinations. Assistant coach Shane Watson echoed this, describing the lineup as having “incredible world-class options.”
Despite their batting strength, KKR face concerns on the bowling front. Matheesha Pathirana is set to miss the early part of the season due to injury, while Harshit Rana is still regaining fitness. There are also questions around the recent form of lead spinner Varun Chakravarthy.
Nayar, however, remains optimistic, highlighting a strong spin department that includes Sunil Narine and others. He suggested KKR could “moneyball” their way through matches, particularly at Eden Gardens, where high-scoring games are common.
After a disappointing 2025 season, KKR will look to reset under new leadership and make the most of fresh opportunities to return to title contention.
