Miller's career-best 142 and Bavuma's home hundred seal South Africa's series win over Australia

David Miller's career-best 142 and a first one-day international century at the Wanderers for Temba Bavuma carried South Africa to a 32-run win over Australia and an unassailable lead in the series

South Africa made 365 for 9 after being sent in at the Wanderers, and bowled Australia out for 333 with two balls of the chase unused. The hosts are 2-0 up in the three-match series with a game to play.

Miller's 142 from 93 balls was his eighth one-day international hundred and his fourth against Australia, and it won him the player-of-the-match award. Bavuma's 103 held the other end of a fourth-wicket stand worth 156.

It is South Africa's sixth successive bilateral one-day series win over Australia, a run that stretches back to 2016/17.

A stand of 156 rebuilds the innings

Australia's decision to bowl looked immediately right when Josh Hazlewood had Aiden Markram caught off the first ball of the match.

Matthew Breetzke made 34 from 28 balls before South Africa lost a third wicket inside the first hour, leaving Bavuma to bat with the innings unsettled.

The captain took 116 balls over his 103, hitting ten fours and two sixes, while Miller scored at better than a run a ball from the start. Their partnership for the fourth wicket turned a recovery into a total.

Miller hit 12 fours and nine sixes in the highest score of his one-day international career.

Edwards answers with a maiden five-for

Jack Edwards, playing only his second one-day international, took 5-67 from his ten overs, the first five-wicket haul of his List A career.

He dismissed Breetzke, Bavuma, Tristan Stubbs, Marco Jansen and finally Miller.

Hazlewood took 3-70, and eight of the nine wickets to fall in the innings went to the two of them.

Marsh and Head give Australia a start

Australia's reply began at a pace that kept the target in view. Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head put on 130 for the first wicket in 17 overs.

Marsh made 84 from 53 balls with ten fours and five sixes before Bjorn Fortuin bowled him.

Head matched him for runs if not for tempo, 84 from 76, and fell lbw sweeping at Aiden Markram.

South Africa's spinners squeeze the middle

Bavuma gave Keshav Maharaj, Fortuin and Markram ten overs each, and the three of them took the game away from Australia between the openers' departure and the closing overs.

Alex Carey made 17 from 21 balls and Matt Renshaw 32 from 34, both lbw to Maharaj. Cameron Green took 34 balls over 17 as the required rate climbed.

Xavier Bartlett gave the chase a last push with 50 from 28 balls, five of them sixes, in a seventh-wicket stand with Edwards, but Australia were bowled out in the 49.5th over.

A name on Miller's back

The match was the Wanderers' annual Pink Day, played to raise awareness of breast cancer, with the South Africa players in pink and carrying the names of cancer survivors on their shirts in place of their own.

Miller wore the name of his mother, Jenny. "She's been through a lot and it was nice to represent my mom and everything she's been through," he said.

"It was an overall good team performance," Bavuma said. "It was tricky batting upfront but we were able to handle that challenge. It was an unbelievable performance by David, then the bowlers did well. They held their nerve, we knew they would put us under pressure."

Marsh was left with a second defeat in the series. "We haven't been able to execute in those middle phases," the Australia captain said.
