England beat Sri Lanka by 223 runs at the Oval to win the one-day series 2-1, the heaviest defeat they have inflicted on the tourists in the format

A maiden one-day international hundred from Tom Banton lifted England to 355 for 7 in the decider, and Sri Lanka were then bowled out for 132 inside 30 overs.

The margin beats England's previous best against Sri Lanka in one-day cricket, a 128-run win at Perth in 1999.

Six of England's seven bowlers took a wicket, with Liam Dawson's 3-26 the best of them as the chase fell apart in the middle overs.

A maiden hundred from Banton

Harry Brook won the toss and batted, and England lost Ben Duckett for 0 to Dilshan Madusanka before the innings had settled.

Banton took the game away from Sri Lanka instead. He made 126 from 105 balls with 16 fours and five sixes, his first century for England, before holing out to long-on off Sachindu Colombage.

"As a kid you dream of scoring a hundred for your country and to do it here was really special," Banton said afterwards.

Brook, dropped on seven, made 77 off 66 and shared a third-wicket stand of 150 with Banton that shaped the innings.

Joe Root made 18 from 37 balls at the other end before Janith Liyanage trapped him lbw, the spinner finishing with 1-37 from six overs.

Cox keeps the rate climbing

The acceleration came from Jordan Cox, whose 76 off 52 arrived once the platform had been laid.

Will Jacks added 25 from 21 balls and Jamie Overton finished 21 not out from 14, carrying England past 350.

Asitha Fernando was the most successful of the Sri Lanka bowlers with 3-64 from his nine overs, taking the wickets of Brook, Cox and Dawson. Colombage went for 71 from his ten.

Sri Lanka lose their way in the chase

Chasing 356, Sri Lanka lost Pathum Nissanka for 1, caught by Cox off Sonny Baker, and never recovered the initiative.

Gus Atkinson removed Kamindu Mendis for 12 and then the captain Kusal Mendis, whose 35 from 26 balls was the only score above 20 in the innings. Atkinson finished with 2-26 from five overs.

Pavan Rathnayake was run out by Jofra Archer for 18, and Dawson then took the lower middle order apart, removing Dunith Wellalage, Colombage and Asitha Fernando.

Sri Lanka were all out for 132 in 29.1 overs, with Root, Overton and Jacks each taking a wicket as the innings closed. Liyanage's 19 was the next best score after the captain's.

A record margin for a settled side

"I thought that was a near-perfect performance there," Brook said of the win.

Root put the result in the context of the whole season. "I think we've only lost two white ball games all summer, so this group's doing incredibly well," he said.

Kusal Mendis did not look for excuses. "We struggled with the batting and then we made some mistakes in the field, including me," the Sri Lanka captain said.

Awards and what comes next

Banton was named player of the match for his hundred, and Will Jacks took the player of the series award for his work with bat and ball across the tour.

Sri Lanka travel to Pakistan next, with the batting problems that surfaced at the Oval still to be answered.

England end the series with the trophy and a first international century for one of their newer top-order options.
