Middlesex dominate as du Plooy’s 182 and Roland-Jones’ burst dent Gloucestershire

Middlesex tightened their grip over Gloucestershire after a commanding all-round display on day two at Lord’s.

The hosts piled up an imposing 445 for 9 declared, driven by a superb 182 from captain Leus du Plooy and a fluent 97 from Joe Cracknell. Their sixth-wicket partnership of 181 laid the foundation for a dominant first-innings total.

Du Plooy reached his century early in the day and went on to control proceedings with authority, mixing elegance with aggression. Cracknell provided excellent support but fell agonisingly short of a hundred, bowled by Graeme van Buuren.

Gloucestershire found a brief spark through Miles Hammond, who not only picked up two wickets in a remarkable over but later led the batting resistance. However, Middlesex declared soon after du Plooy’s dismissal to press for wickets.

That move paid immediate dividends as Toby Roland-Jones produced a devastating new-ball spell. He reduced Gloucestershire to 26 for 3, removing key batters including Cameron Bancroft with a superb delivery that clipped the off stump.

Roland-Jones’ relentless accuracy and movement caused constant problems, putting Middlesex firmly in control heading into the latter half of the day.

Gloucestershire, however, showed resilience through Hammond, who compiled an unbeaten 59 and shared a 90-run partnership with Ollie Price to stabilise the innings. Just as they looked to close the gap further, Price fell late in the day, handing the initiative back to Middlesex.

At stumps, Gloucestershire were 116 for 4, still trailing by 329 runs. With a huge deficit and Middlesex’s bowlers in rhythm, the visitors face an uphill battle to get back into the contest.
